Are you experiencing an adverse weather event or natural disaster? If the power goes out, keep your freezer door closed. A full freezer can keep milk frozen for up to 48 hours, while a half-full freezer can keep it frozen for about 24 hours. Once power has been restored, check your milk. If it still contains any ice crystals, it is safe to refreeze.

Keep the freezer door shut while power is out. Once power is restored, check to see if there are any ice crystals that remain in the bags. If there are any ice crystals at all, it may be refrozen.

Summer temperatures are setting in, and with the heat comes a change in feeding patterns for many breastfed babies. If your little one seems to be asking to nurse more often, they're likely responding to increased hydration needs. During hot weather, it's common to see shorter, more frequent nursing sessions as babies take in what they need to stay comfortable and hydrated.

Here's my hot take *before* the power goes out from the incredible demand in this next weather pattern.

Consider NOW moving your milk stash temporarily to a situation with backup power like a generator.

Wherever you end up keeping it, organize your stash so you can easily grab just the right amount of bags for a certain time span and otherwise keep that freezer door shut tight.

Pack your freezer tight with lots of ice all the way around your stash top and bottom in all directions. Yes you can also pack your freezer full of food but that's a lot more expensive; and to risk all that during a power outage would be such a bummer.

It's absolutely fine to spend more time direct feeding if you can keep that freezer door shut a few more hours while the lights are out. This could save the milk you've put away.

Think about how you and your family can keep their cool during this heatwave: basement, shade, and if you're older than a year then drink lots of water.

Also plan now how to keep everyone's cool when their electronics are unavailable.

Don't be scared be prepared!

Good luck!

🌡️ A dangerous heat wave will impact the central & eastern U.S. starting Sun and continue through the Jul 4 weekend. Highs will be in the 90s-100s with heat indices of 100–110° (locally 115°). Warm nights will offer little relief. Stay hydrated, limit outdoor activity, and seek A/C.

Texts might get through better than soc med. Just give them the highlights if someone is in a jam and thank you for supporting friends and family!
