Summertime is for barbeques and picnics! Keep everyone safe and healthy at your celebrations by being aware of food temperatures. If you’re having a barbeque, be aware of how long cooked items have been sitting and remember to wash your hands to avoid becoming sick from food poisoning.

Protection from UV rays is important all year, not just during the summer. UV rays can reach you on cloudy and cool days, and they reflect off of surfaces like water, cement, sand, and snow.

In the continental United States, UV rays tend to be strongest from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daylight saving time (9 a.m. to 3 p.m. standard time).

World Drowning Prevention Day

Every life is worth protecting.

On July 25, we recognize World Drowning Prevention Day and raise awareness about a tragedy that is often preventable. A few simple actions can save lives:

💙 Learn to swim and practice water safety.
🦺 Wear a properly fitted life jacket when boating or around open water.
👀 Always supervise children near water—stay within arm's reach.
📱 Avoid distractions and never swim alone.
🚨 Learn CPR and know what to do in an emergency.

Together, we can help prevent drowning through education, awareness, and action. Let's make every visit to the water a safe one.

🚨 With the recent increase in Cyclospora infections, here's what you need to know:

🦠 What is it?
Cyclospora is a parasite that infects the intestines and can cause significant gastrointestinal illness.

⏳ Incubation period:
Symptoms typically begin 1–2 weeks after exposure, so it may take some time before you become sick.

🤒 Common symptoms:

Severe watery diarrhea
Stomach cramps
Nausea and vomiting
Loss of appetite
Fatigue
Bloating and gas

💊 Treatment:
Cyclospora is treated with antibiotics, so it's important to seek medical care if you're experiencing these symptoms.

🥗 How is it spread?
People can become infected by consuming improperly washed fresh produce, especially fruits and vegetables such as lettuce and raspberries that are contaminated with the parasite.

📞 If you have symptoms:
Please seek medical evaluation so you can be properly diagnosed and treated.

📋 Public health follow-up:
If you are diagnosed with Cyclospora, someone from your local public health department may contact you. This follow-up helps identify possible sources of infection and prevent additional cases in the community.

Staying informed and practicing good food safety—such as thoroughly washing fresh produce—can help reduce your risk.
