How can autism present in teenagers?

Autism in teenagers is not always obvious. Many teens work hard to fit in socially, manage anxiety, or hide the areas they struggle with most. As academic, social, and emotional demands increase during the teen years, challenges may become more noticeable over time.

Some signs of autism in teens may include:
• Difficulty making or maintaining friendships
• Feeling socially “different” from peers
• Exhaustion after school or social situations
• Anxiety, especially in social or unpredictable settings
• Strong interests or highly focused passions
• Sensory sensitivities to noise, clothing, food textures, crowds, etc.
• Difficulty understanding social cues, sarcasm, or unspoken expectations
• Preference for routines and predictability
• Emotional shutdowns, irritability, or overwhelm after holding it together all day
• Challenges with flexibility, organization, or transitions

A comprehensive autism evaluation can help provide clarity, identify strengths and support needs, and guide recommendations for school, home, work, and daily life.

At Family Priority Evaluations, autism evaluations for teens may include:
✔ Parent and developmental interviews
✔ Direct assessment and observations
✔ Cognitive and academic testing when appropriate
✔ Behavioral, social-emotional, and adaptive functioning rating scales
✔ A detailed report with individualized recommendations

Family Priority Evaluations provides autism evaluations for children, teens, and adults throughout South Carolina, with telehealth options available for portions of the evaluation process. Complimentary consultations are available.

Sometimes children with dyslexia work so hard to keep up that their struggles go unnoticed for years.

Many children with dyslexia are told things like:
“They just need to try harder.”
“They’re smart, so it can’t be dyslexia.”
“They read fine out loud.”
“They’re just inattentive or unmotivated.”

But dyslexia does not always look the way people expect.

Research shows that some students develop “stealth dyslexia,” where strong comprehension, vocabulary, or problem-solving skills help mask underlying reading difficulties. These students may compensate well enough that their struggles go unnoticed for years.

Signs can include:
• Slow or effortful reading
• Difficulty sounding out unfamiliar words
• Trouble with spelling and written expression
• Avoiding reading aloud
• Strong verbal skills but weaker written work
• Fatigue, frustration, or anxiety around schoolwork

In many cases, dyslexia is not identified until middle school, high school, or even adulthood.

Dyslexia is also more common than many people realize — affecting approximately 1 in 5 individuals.

Early identification and the right support can make a huge difference in confidence, academic progress, and self-esteem.

Family Priority Evaluations provides comprehensive evaluations for dyslexia and other learning differences for children, teens, and adults across South Carolina.

Virtual and in-person options available.

The school year is almost over… and for some parents, that comes with a lot of unanswered questions.
Maybe your child made it through another year, but it never felt easy.
Maybe homework was a nightly battle.
Maybe reading still feels hard.
Maybe they are constantly overwhelmed, distracted, frustrated, or shutting down.
Sometimes children move on to the next grade, but the underlying struggles do not simply disappear with summer break.
If you are ending this school year still wondering why everything feels harder than it should, this can be the perfect time to get answers.
Summer is often an ideal time for comprehensive evaluations without the added pressure of daily school demands.

What does an Autism Evaluation actually include?
If you’ve ever wondered what goes into an autism evaluation, you’re not alone. Many families aren’t sure what to expect or where to start.
A comprehensive autism evaluation looks at the whole person, not just one test. It typically includes:
• A detailed clinical interview to understand developmental history, strengths, and concerns
• Standardized assessments like the ADOS-2 to observe social communication and behavior
• Cognitive testing to better understand how your child thinks and learns
• Parent and teacher rating scales to gather input across settings
• Adaptive skills measures (daily living, communication, social skills)
• Academic testing, when needed, to look at learning patterns
All of this information is brought together into a clear, individualized report with meaningful recommendations—so you’re not just getting answers, but also guidance on what to do next.
If you’ve been questioning whether an evaluation might help your child, you’re not alone—and having the right information can make a big difference.

They’re doing okay… but it feels harder than it should be.”
Your child is passing their classes.
They move on to the next grade each year.
But behind the scenes…
• Homework takes hours
• They get frustrated or shut down easily
• You’re constantly having to help, remind, or reteach
• They’re working twice as hard for the same results
And you’re left wondering:
“Is this just how it is… or is something being missed?”
Sometimes, these are early signs of things like:
✔️ ADHD
✔️ Learning differences (like dyslexia or dysgraphia)
✔️ Executive functioning challenges
Especially in kids who are bright and just managing to keep up.
A comprehensive evaluation can give you real answers—
not just what’s hard, but why… and what actually helps.
I currently have evaluation appointments available with no waitlist, including spots reserved for autism evaluations.
If you’ve been wondering whether to look into this, this is a good time to start the conversation.

“He’s just lazy.”
“She just needs to try harder.”
These are things many teens hear when they’re struggling, but often, they’re already trying as hard as they can.
Some teens:
• Take hours to complete homework
• Avoid starting assignments
• Shut down when overwhelmed
• Seem capable, but inconsistent
When this continues over time, it can turn into anxiety, low confidence, and even school refusal.
Sometimes, the missing piece is understanding how they learn and what’s making things harder than they should be.
An evaluation can help connect those dots.

If you’ve been getting emails or phone calls from school and aren’t sure what to do next, you’re not alone.
This time of year, many parents are hearing things like:
• “Your child is at risk of failing”
• “Interventions have been put in place, but progress is limited”
• “Attendance is becoming a concern”
• “They’re struggling to keep up with grade-level expectations”
And it can feel overwhelming.
But here’s the important part—
these messages are often a signal, not the full story.
When a child continues to struggle despite support, it may point to something deeper:
• A learning difference (like dyslexia, dysgraphia, or dyscalculia)
• Attention or executive functioning challenges
• Anxiety or school avoidance
• Or a learning style that isn’t being supported in the current setting
You’re not missing something.
And your child isn’t “just not trying.”

If you’ve been getting these messages and aren’t sure what to do next, I’m happy to talk it through with you. Sometimes clarity is the first step toward real support.
