If my couples therapist isn’t doing these three things, I am probably ditching them, to be honest! Do you agree?

If my couples therapist isn’t doing these three things, you better believe I’m finding a new one!

At the end of the day, it’s a personal decision, and the age of the therapist and the number of years practicing sometimes has very little to do with the quality of the experience you will have with them!

As I’m doing some interviewing this week, I thought I’d share a little bit about what I look for when I’m hiring a new therapist. The way the therapist shows up in the room is so important to me… Are they warm and empathetic and are they articulate and able to communicate well in a way that clients will understand. In terms of approaches, Ethredge Counseling Group is a holistic practice, meaning we incorporate the logical part of the brain, but we’re also working with the right brain the nervous system, the body, the emotions and able to help clients create change through working beyond cognition and beneath behavior. Some of the approaches that we use here at ECG are EFT (emotionally focused couples therapy) internal family systems, EMDR, psychodynamic, and all from a person centered and holistic perspective.

The things you do to protect yourself in an argument is usually the same things pushing your partner away.

You get defensive. You raise your voice. You shut down, or you start listing everything they've done wrong since 2019. In the moment it feels like standing up for yourself. Then the fight ends and you feel further apart than when it started.

Mary Seitz wrote about fair fighting on the blog this week. She's clear that the goal isn't staying calm and communicating perfectly (nobody does that). She covers why "you always" and "you never" send your partner hunting for the one exception instead of hearing you, and one shift that changes how they respond when you're hurt.

Read it here:

Arguments are a normal part of being close to someone. Even couples who love each other very much are going to disagree, misunderstand each other, and sometimes say or do things that hurt. Often, in the heat of a disagreement, the intensity of our reactions has less to do with the argument itself
