Cancer treatment can save lives, but some treatments leave survivors with lasting challenges, including hearing loss.

Research suggests that 40% to 50% of patients treated with the chemotherapy drug cisplatin experience hearing loss or ringing in the ears.

With support from a new five-year National Cancer Institute grant, Hollings researcher Dr. Brent Wilkerson and his team are investigating how cisplatin damages the inner ear. Their goal is to identify new ways to protect patients' hearing without interfering with the drug's ability to fight cancer.

The research reflects Hollings' commitment to helping people not only survive cancer but also enjoy a better quality of life after treatment.

When Dr. Colton Southard-Goebel signed up for free genetic screening through MUSC’s In Our DNA SC program, he was young, healthy and curious about what his DNA might reveal.

He never expected to learn that he carries a BRCA2 gene mutation.

Like many people, the MUSC anesthesiology resident associated BRCA genes primarily with breast cancer in women. But certain BRCA2 mutations can also increase men’s risk of prostate, pancreatic and male breast cancers – information that can guide health decisions for years to come.

“I keep circling back to it feeling empowering to know more about my health,” Colton said. “We all have genes that can be carried on to future generations, so the more we know, the better.”

Read how one simple test provided unexpected insight into his health, his family and his future on our website:

When genetic testing revealed he has a BRCA2 mutation, a young doctor learned how this mutation associated with women's health also has implications for men's health.
