For patients diagnosed with locally advanced pancreatic cancer, treatment options have remained largely unchanged for decades.

Now, some Roper St. Francis Healthcare oncologists are certified to prescribe Optune Pax, a newly FDA-approved therapy that uses low-intensity alternating electric fields, known as Tumor Treating Fields (TTFields), alongside chemotherapy to disrupt cancer cell division.

Patients wear adhesive arrays across the abdomen connected to a portable generator carried in a backpack or shoulder bag, worn at least 12 hours a day while continuing standard chemotherapy.

Wearing the device requires commitment, but clinical trial results suggest it can make a meaningful difference: researchers found patients experienced delayed worsening of symptoms, including pain and overall health decline.

"It's not a cure, and it's not the right treatment for everyone," said Dr. George Keogh, Medical Director of the Oncology Integrated Practice Network and oncologist with Charleston Oncology, a department of Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital. "But when we're caring for patients with pancreatic cancer, every additional option matters. Every advance gives patients more time, more hope and more opportunities for future treatments."

Roper St. Francis Healthcare is the first in South Carolina to offer early access to the new pan-RAS inhibitor, daraxonrasib, for advanced pancreatic cancer, and we have begun treating our first patient.

This investigational targeted therapy is designed to block multiple forms of abnormal RAS proteins, offering new hope to patients with certain advanced cancers. We are committed to offering leading-edge therapies and clinical research opportunities close to home.

Colleen Turick became a volunteer in July 2013 and has logged more than 4,500 service hours with Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital. She’s a familiar face at the Cancer Center information desk every Wednesday morning.

She also crochets blankets and caps, which she gives to family and friends. She has donated caps to the special care nursery, and after learning her caps could help adult patients in the Cancer Center, she got to work and delivered a batch to be handed out to patients who wanted one.

We appreciate Colleen and all of our volunteers, who go out of their way to give their time and compassion.

The Roper St. Francis Healthcare Mobile Health Unit is offering free breast cancer screenings on Friday, July 10, from 1-5 p.m. at Moncks Corner Medical Plaza. No insurance required.

To qualify, participants must be 18 or older and have not had a breast exam in the past year. A mammogram may also be provided if certain criteria are met.

As part of National Cancer Survivor Month and National Cancer Survivors Day, Roper St. Francis Healthcare and Charleston Oncology partnered to host Living in Bloom celebrations, bringing together cancer survivors and care teams for an evening of connection and encouragement.

Survivors in treatment and those in remission gathered to share stories, celebrate their journeys and enjoy meaningful fellowship alongside physicians, cancer care leaders and others who understand the challenges and triumphs of survivorship.

Living in Bloom continues to highlight the strength, resilience and hope of our survivor community while reflecting our commitment to supporting patients throughout every stage of their cancer journey.
