Ralph H. Johnson VA Health Care System The Ralph H. Johnson VA Health Care System serves over 100,000 Veterans along the South Carolina and Georgia coast.

We put Veterans at the center of all we do, delivering high-quality care and exceptional customer service. Johnson VA Health Care System is a tertiary care teaching hospital providing the highest-level quality complex care from cardiology to neurology to primary and mental health care for approximately 80,000 Veterans along the South Carolina and Georgia coast. The medical center includes six community-based outpatient clinics, a 20-bed nursing home, women’s health, and the full range of inpatient and outpatient care, including medical and surgical intensive care. 🦷 Our partners at MUSC College of Dental Medicine are helping Veterans smile a little brighter.

On Friday, Nov. 6, MUSC will host Give Veterans a Smile, offering free dental exams and cleanings for Veterans. Tooth extractions will also be available for those with urgent needs.

The event is intended for Veterans who do not currently have a dental home. Those needing additional oral health care can also be connected with MUSC or a community provider for follow-up care.

✂️ Fresh cut Friday!

One of the highlights from yesterday’s Veteran Stand Down was seeing volunteers step up in so many ways, including providing free haircuts for Veterans.

This volunteer barber shared that she’s been cutting hair for Veterans for about 20 years and loves being able to take care of those who served.

A simple haircut can go a long way. 💈

Friendly reminder: In observance of Columbus Day on Monday, Oct. 12, Ralph H. Johnson VA Health Care System outpatient clinics and administrative offices will be closed.

Normal operations will resume Tuesday, Oct. 13.

For a life-threatening medical emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department. Veterans experiencing a mental health crisis can call 988, then press 1, or text 838255 to reach the Veterans Crisis Line.

For non-urgent health care needs, Veterans can use VA online services to send secure messages, manage appointments, request prescription refills and more.

We wish everyone a safe federal holiday.

🤝 Today was about connecting Veterans with resources, opportunities and people ready to help.

Veterans joined us at today’s Veteran Stand Down for Homelessness in North Charleston, where VA teams and community partners provided a variety of services and support throughout the day.

💼 Among them was our job fair, where employment specialists from the Ralph H. Johnson VA Health Care System’s Homeless Program helped connect Veterans with 21 local and national employers for interviews and future interview opportunities.

🏠 From employment and housing assistance to health care, benefits information and other resources, today was about meeting Veterans where they are and helping connect them with the support they need.

💙 Thank you to our staff, community partners, employers and volunteers who helped make today possible, and most importantly, to the Veterans who joined us.

🍂 A little look back at last year’s VA Fall Festival!

From decorated service line tables and games to food, music and plenty of conversations, last year’s event brought Veterans, employees and visitors together for an afternoon of fun while learning more about the programs and services available across our health care system.

Here are a few moments from last year as we look ahead to our Fourth Annual VA Fall Festival on Thursday, Oct. 15, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the South Entrance Patio of the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center.

🔬 Ever wonder what happens behind the scenes in Research & Development?

Courtney, a research coordinator at the Ralph H. Johnson VA Health Care System, takes us along for a visit with fellow research coordinator Dana to learn more about the Million Veteran Program and how Veterans can get involved.

Research & Development at Ralph H. Johnson supports work aimed at discovering new knowledge, developing innovations and ultimately improving health and health care for Veterans. One part of that work is the Million Veteran Program, a national VA research effort using Veteran health and genetic information to help researchers better understand conditions ranging from PTSD and heart disease to cancer and more.

Courtney’s primary role is in Research & Development, but she also serves as one of our RHJ Frontline Influencers, helping us share a firsthand look at the people, programs and work happening across our health care system.

A big thank-you to Courtney for bringing us along and to Dana for taking the time to share more about the Million Veteran Program and the opportunities Veterans have to participate in research.

We’ll be sharing more from Courtney’s visits around Research & Development soon, so stay tuned for another behind-the-scenes look next week.
