Nursing research leads to AEDs in Chapel Hill parks
Two emergencies and advocacy by a Carolina nurse scientist sparked 24/7 outdoor access to lifesaving defibrillators.

Over the past year, Chapel Hill has strategically installed automated external defibrillators across its parks, ensuring that lifesaving technology is available when it matters most. Two of the strongest advocates for the initiative are Carolina emergency cardiac researcher Jessica Zègre-Hemsey and her husband, Dr. David Hemsey.

Hemsey witnessed one of two separate cardiac arrests that sparked the AED installations, both occurring during a nighttime adult soccer league. The doctor and his teammates immediately performed CPR and called 911, but they were unable to access the nearest AED because it was inside a locked public building. Though the victim survived, the experience highlighted the urgent need for AEDs to be accessible 24/7, particularly in outdoor areas.

“As a nurse scientist with a program of research in emergency cardiac care, and with my husband’s background as a hospitalist and professor in the School of Medicine at UNC, we knew we had to advocate for the integration of this lifesaving technology into our community,” said Zègre-Hemsey. She is an associate professor in the UNC School of Nursing and adjunct professor in the medical school’s emergency medicine department.

“Readily accessible 24/7 AEDs are critical to our community and public health,” she said. “Data show that knowing where AEDs are located in an emergency and having ready access to AEDs are critically important to survival for victims of cardiac arrest. This is a significant investment in our community.”

'He was extremely lucky': Wife reacts after husband saved by AED in Hanover's Pole Green Park

An automated external defibrillator, or AED, saved a man's life at Pole Green Park in Hanover County during a softball game. Jack Mullikin's wife Sally said he is the epitome of health -- which made his heart attack all the more shocking. But thanks to the AED in Pole Green Park, he's still here today.

Coaches, trainer, AED save sophomore’s life

September 18 started as just another Wednesday for Hollidaysburg resident Jen Davis.

Her husband, Dave, was at work near Lake Raystown Resort and her son, Spencer, was at football practice at Charles W. Longer Elementary School, so Jen decided to go for a walk across from the facility and glanced over to see if she could get a glimpse of him.

“I was out walking, and I just walked past the field and looked over,” Jen said. “I saw there was a player down and couldn’t tell who it was. Practice was still going on, so I continued walking. That’s when (Hollidaysburg Area football coach Homer) DeLattre flagged me down and told me I needed to go over, because it was Spence.”

At that moment, Sept. 18, 2024, became a day Jen will remember for the rest of her life, because if not for the heroic actions of a group of coaches and Hollidaysburg athletic trainer Amy Smearman, it could have been the date on Spencer’s tombstone.

Enabling citizen response is key to improving outcomes in cases of time-sensitive and life threatening emergencies.

We’re excited to announce that Public Access Defibrillators (PAD) have been installed at State Beach locations in Narragansett. The PAD stations include Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) and bleed control kits which are available for use by bystanders in the event of an emergency. These devices can provide critical lifesaving support during times when lifeguards and DEM staff are not onsite, especially during the shoulder seasons and evening hours during the summer. The AED stations are linked with the Narragansett Fire Department and E-911 dispatch. In an emergency, an individual will access the device by calling 911 to receive the access code for the AED.

The five PAD stations will be deployed at Roger Wheeler State Beach, Scarborough North State Beach, Scarborough South State Beach, Salty Brine State Beach, and Fisherman’s Memorial State Campground. These important safety resources were made available thanks to fundraising by the Waterman Eco-Challenge and donations from community partners led by Summer Safe Ocean State.

Public Awareness of Automated External Defibrillator Locations

This research yielded 2 major findings: most respondents willing to use AEDs on strangers could not locate the device during emergencies, and those confident in recognizing AEDs displayed greater awareness of AED locations. Previous research on AED location has primarily focused on deployment strategies. Furthermore, studies also discovered innovative approaches, such as dispatcher-assisted AED retrieval or drone delivery, that align more closely with the concept of passive access to the AED. Although inspiring, these methods may require additional time for telephone calls and dispatcher confirmation. Various urban environments and high costs may also hinder device delivery feasibility. In contrast, active AED retrieval, where bystanders know and retrieve the nearest AED themselves, may lead to shorter time to defibrillation during high-stress situations.

To coincide with World Restart a Heart Day, AED Team is pleased to announce the launch of 🧡Heartbeat Guardian🧡. This is a new AED Team initiative giving back to local communities and celebrating survivors of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) as well as any participants in the chain of survival.

Did your community have a SCA save utilizing the shock of an AED retrieved from an outdoor enclosure purchased from AED Team? If yes, your community may qualify for Heartbeat Guardian recognition!

Through Heartbeat Guardian, AED Team will donate an AED enclosure to the community where the AED was placed, and publicly recognize the members of the chain of survival - survivor, rescuers, and local emergency teams if they wish to participate. We will also assist the community in procuring a free or subsidized AED for the enclosure.

Starting today, October 16, 2024, Heartbeat Guardian is open for any SCA saves that utilized a CE-TEK 4000 enclosure (see application for details). In addition to this post, emails have been sent to clients announcing the launch of this program. After Jan 1, 2025, saves must be reported within three months of the incident via the application form on our website.

ATTLEBORO, Mass. (WPRI) — The Attleboro Fire Department recently received a generous and potentially life-saving donation.

Sisters At Heart gifted the fire department with eight automated external defibrillators (AEDs). The fire department is in the process of mounting the donated AEDs in public spaces across the city.

So far, AEDs have been successfully installed at Hayward Field, Ponson Hewitt Field and Dodgeville Field. The fire department said AEDs will also be placed at Horton Field, Finberg Field, Highland Park, Capron Park and Lees Pond.

“We are incredibly grateful for this life-saving donation from Sisters at Heart,” Attleboro Fire Chief Scott LaChance said. “These AEDs will provide critical assistance in emergencies, and we urge everyone to take the time to familiarize themselves with bystander CPR. Together, we can make our community safer and more resilient.”

In the event of a cardiac emergency, residents are urged to call 911 immediately and start hands-only CPR. The dispatcher will provide the caller with an access code to unlock the AED, which will be securely housed in a weatherproof box.
