Last night, we gathered for a simple reason: to say thank you.

We celebrated team members who have stayed the course at J. Henry Stuhr for 10, 20, and even 30 years. People whose care, knowledge, and dedication have helped shape not only this company, but the way we serve Charleston families.

Because a legacy is not carried by a name alone.
It is carried by people.

We also shared a bittersweet farewell with Mason Hand as he begins his next chapter at law school here in Charleston. We are grateful for the time he shared with us and excited to see where this next step takes him.

Good food, good fellowship, and a meaningful evening with the people who make J. Henry Stuhr what it is.

Thank you to for the delicious food and for the beautiful cookies.

The Veterans and Staff at Stuhr Funeral Home Remember the Sacrifice of Those Who Gave It all

Memorial Day is often seen as the official start of summer, with celebrating the day off with barbecues and spending time by the pool or lake. But it’s a day with much deeper meaning.
First observed in 1868, Memorial Day is now a federal holiday dedicated to remembering and honoring those US military service members who have given their life in the line of duty.

For years, J. Henry Stuhr Funeral Home has been assisting families of veterans and retirees with funeral honors and tributes. In addition, the team at Stuhr includes several veterans, who offer their services, expertise, and support to families in need.
“Memorial Day is a very special day for folks who have really given all to their country,” said Bob Hammel, a veteran who has worked part-time at Stuhr for several years. He was drafted into the United States Army in 1967 after graduating from college and served for 38 years, retiring as a Colonel.

“It’s a time to really think about and prioritize,” he added. “It’s a very special day for my entire family, because they had to serve with me for the many years that I spent in the military. My wife also just retired as a VA nurse. This day is about paying respects to the veterans. If I see a flag draped over a casket, I tell that family that it’s my honor to be there.”

Charles P. “Chuck” Blankin joined Stuhr Funeral Home in 2008, following a career as a Law Enforcement Officer with the Greenville County Sheriff’s Department. He has worked with Stuhr’s for 17 years, a position he called an honor. “I’ve presented flags to a lot of widows and children, and it means a whole lot to me to be able to do that.”

He also served as a lieutenant with the US Navy, including a nine-month tour of Vietnam. Blankin was awarded the Purple Heart for his service. He is the current Commander of the VFW Post 445 on James Island and founded Commander’s Honors, which supports unclaimed veterans.

“An unclaimed veteran, through reasons such as PTSD, and things like that, is disowned by their family, and many of them are homeless,” explained Blankin. “Commander’s Honors offers programs to try and help them, and we’ve also made it our mission to give them the honors they deserve.”
Peter Rascoe retired as a commander after 30 years of both active duty and reserve time in the United States Coast Guard. He has been a resident of Charleston since 2019 and worked with the city of Charleston for four and a half years before joining Stuhr.

“When I moved here, I immediately volunteered at the Ralph H. Johnson Veterans Administration Medical Center in the ER and just received my 500-hour certificate,” said Rascoe. “It’s something I enjoy doing because our veterans are entitled to a great level of respect and I feel honored to be able to serve them. Working at Stuhr’s gives another chance to return that respect and honor to those who are deceased, as well as their families.”
Chuck describes his work with veterans at Stuhr’s as more of a ministry than a job. “You’re helping people at some of their toughest times, and their emotions were running raw, so to be able to give a little comfort to somebody means the world to me.”

This year, Stuhr once again sponsors the Memorial Day service at the American Legion on Folly Road in James Island. There will be a guest speaker, benediction and lunch.

“In addition, for the last 10 plus years, we’ve been placing flags on all the veterans’ graves at our cemetery, Mount Pleasant Memorial Gardens, and Holy Cross Cemetery
on James Island, in partnership with other veterans and also students from some of the local public schools,” said Brian Calhoun, funeral director at Stuhr Funeral Home.
Calhoun states that Stuhr takes a lot of pride having veterans on their staff. “They raised their right hand, took the oath, served and sacrificed, and even though their time in uniform is over, they still have that heart of service and heart of sacrifice,” said Calhoun.

“At Stuhr Funeral Home, they found one more way that they can continue to give back, and that’s serving their fellow veterans and their families, whether that’s presenting a flag or driving to the final resting place. These veterans are just a few of who we have here, but it’s been a continued legacy having these guys on our staff who want to give back.”

For Johnny Stuhr, This Career is a Calling

Everyone has a different reason for choosing their career. For John A. “Johnny” Stuhr, joining the family business came down to one reason only.

“I love helping people,” said Johnny, who currently serves as the president of Stuhr Funeral Home.

When he was young, Johnny tagged along with his father, Albert Stuhr, to the funeral home on a regular basis. By spending his days around those going through difficult times, Johnny felt called to work in the funeral industry and make it his career as well.

Johnny graduated from Charleston High School and attended Newberry College in Newberry, South Carolina. He then joined the company on September 28, 1965.

Throughout his long and illustrious career, he has earned a number of accolades. In 1991, Johnny was awarded the “Aaron Solomon Humanitarian Award” in recognition for his service to the Jewish community of Charleston.

He has also been a life member and past president of the German Friendly Society, the second-oldest German society in America, which celebrates Charleston’s German heritage. Johnny has held the office of secretary and treasurer of the South Carolina Funeral Directors Association, Inc. (SCFDA).

He belongs to many organizations, including The Ancient Order of Hibernians, the Carolina Yacht Club, the Albemarle Supper Club, The Sullivan’s Island Club, the Arion Society of Charleston, and the Washington Light Infantry. He is also a member of St.
Matthews Lutheran Church.

When he’s not serving families, Johnny likes to take his pup, Scarlett, for daily walks downtown and spend time at his home on Sullivan’s Island. Johnny’s family includes his wife Cameron, daughter Frances and son John, daughter-in-law Ashley, and
grandchildren Abigayle and Atticus.

When asked what advice he would give to someone who has suffered a loss and needs to choose a funeral home to support them through what’s next, Johnny said, “We have been in business since 1865, and we want to be here for another 100 years. We have the best professional staff in the business.”

He should know because he had a hand in making Stuhr’s Funeral Home a place family turn to and trust for generations.

New Year, New Traditions: How to Honor Loved Ones All Year

Honoring your loved one after they pass doesn’t have to be limited to holidays or their birthdays. Keeping their memory alive is something that you can do all year long. Staying connected can help to process grief in a positive way. Here are some ideas to get you started.

Plant a Memorial Garden
Whether you dedicate a small area inside your home or apartment or a larger section in the yard, a memorial garden is a wonderful way to remember someone you’ve lost. While you’re pruning or watering the garden, use that time to reflect on your loved one. You can include children in the gardening tasks as well.

Be Crafty
Crafts do not have to be tied to a special occasion. When you have time, or when you miss your loved one, do something. You can paint a photo, sketch a picture, create a memory book, or sculpt something. If you have children, talk to them about their feelings and encourage them to make a finger painting for the person they are missing.

Choose a Day for Honor
Dedicate a particular day each month to honoring your loved one. On that day, listen to their favorite music, watch a movie they loved, write them a letter, or just write about them. This doesn’t have to be limited to one day, but you can start a routine each month and build from there.

Light a Candle
Honoring your loved one does not need to be complicated. A simple loving gesture, such as lighting a candle each day, can be a sweet regular tribute.

Make Their Favorite Meals
Did your loved one have a favorite recipe they asked for regularly? Was your lasagna or carrot cake the must-have item? Enjoy any of these delicious items on their behalf. The simple of making a meal is a great way to show your gratitude or evoke fun memories.

Give Back
Volunteer for a cause that was important to your loved one. Did they participate in a marathon to benefit the local community? Did they help raise money for a cancer research group? Continue their passion in their name. Remember, if it’s not something you can physically do – for example, you cannot run a marathon – do not feel obligated. Instead, choose something that is within your comfort zone.

Take a Trip
Did you and your loved one take a regular trip to the beach, go on a camping trip, or escape everyday life at another favorite destination? If you can, revisit, share memories, and continue to enjoy the location. Traditions do not have to stop after your loved one is gone. It might be difficult without them, but it’s okay to continue your vacation traditions.

Create a Memory Jar
Create a shared space, or make a box or jar to deposit memories or feelings of gratitude that pop up during the day. Write them on strips of paper and read them when you want to look back. If you have children, they can add to it whenever they are dealing with their grief.

Start a Legacy Project
These take time, but they will keep your loved one’s memory alive for years. Consider creating a scholarship in their name at their alma mater or at a local high school. If you are up to the task, write their life story and send it to family members who might be interested.

Whatever you choose, feel free to change it when you want. There are no rules when it comes to honoring your loved one year-round.
