South Carolina AHEC South Carolina AHEC (Area Health Education Consortium) builds and supports the healthcare workforce South Carolina needs.

Established in 1972, South Carolina AHEC is the only organization in South Carolina that addresses healthcare workforce needs starting with high school students and extending to practicing healthcare professionals throughout the state.

Yesterday was Day 1 of the MUSC Health & Mid-Carolina AHEC Healthcare Exploration Boot Camp!

MUSC Health Midlands welcomed an incredible group of middle and high school students for the start of our three-day Healthcare Exploration Boot Camp, designed to introduce them to the many career opportunities available in healthcare.

The day focused on professional development, networking, and career exploration.

Students participated in:
- Resume Building and Interview Preparation with Sydney Price
- Mock Interviews with Madison Sweatt
- A Healthcare Careers Panel featuring diverse healthcare leaders and clinicians

Our panelists shared their unique career journeys and provided valuable advice on education pathways, career growth, and opportunities within healthcare. A special thank you to our panel representatives from:
• Respiratory Therapy
• Nutrition & Dietetics
• Physical Therapy
• Nursing Leadership
• Workforce Development

This program would not be possible without our partnership with MUSC Health team members who volunteered their time and expertise to support the next generation of healthcare professionals.

We’re excited for Day 2, where students will earn their Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, participate in hands-on skills training, and explore healthcare education pathways.

🎉 This past week, we welcomed the 2026 SC AHEC Summer Health Careers Academy Fellows to MUSC! Throughout the week, students participated in immersive learning experiences designed to prepare them for future programs in the health professions, including dentistry.

The South Carolina Office for Healthcare Workforce (SCOHW), a division of South Carolina AHEC, studies issues that affect the balance of supply and demand for different types of healthcare professionals across the state. During the last fiscal year, the SCOHW team published 10 new reports and data visualizations, presented at 8 national and state meetings and fulfilled 67 data requests.

South Carolina AHEC continuing education programs provide a local and low-cost approach to the education needed for health professionals to maintain their licensure and certifications and practice high-quality healthcare without having to travel far from their communities.

Last year, SC AHEC participants accrued 87,291 total contact hours of continuing education! 🎉 Additionally, of the 18,586 total registrations for continuing professional development programs, 73% were from professionals in medically underserved areas and 17% were from professionals in rural communities.

On April 21, 2026 our HPS Coordinators collaborated with the USC Lancaster Nursing Simulation Lab to facilitate another High-Fidelity Simulation session. A USC medical student and MUSC FNP student worked together to assess the simulated patient and create an interdisciplinary treatment plan for each of 3 patient encounters in this longitudinal case.
