Every hospice patient is unique, but hospice is about living the highest quality of life possible. For some, this includes being able to travel, either locally or out of town.

Sometimes after a patient’s pain or symptoms are relieved, travel may be possible to visit family and friends, attend a special event or take a vacation.

Your hospice nurse and social worker can help plan your trip to continue services while traveling. They can make sure you have any medicines you’ll need, can be on-call for any questions and can make arrangements with a nearby hospice should a visit be needed.

Are you a caregiver for someone living with dementia or another brain-related disease?

The PalliativeCare Center at HospiceCare serves as the state's only GUIDE-approved participant proudly headquartered in West Virginia, providing trusted guidance, comprehensive services, compassionate support, and real relief for people with dementia and their caregivers, including 72 hours of respite care and 24/7 nurse navigator support with access to state and local resources.

The PalliativeCare Center has integrated nationwide best practices tailored specifically to assist and support local patients and their caregivers.

In past decades, most hospice and palliative care admissions have primarily been patients diagnosed with cancer, heart or lung disease, or age-related general debility. Today, dementia is a leading diagnosis, with the number of patients admitted with a primary diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease or dementia increasing from 15% in 2020 to 24% today, a 60% increase. Those admitted for another diagnosis but exhibiting symptoms of dementia have risen from 39% to 61%, an increase of 56%.

To learn more about how The PalliativeCare Center’s GUIDE program can benefit you and your loved one, please call The PalliativeCare Center at 304-941-1952 or visit GuideWV.org.

Yes! We come to you!

Generally, hospice patients want to be where they’re most comfortable and if there is family or a caregiver in the home for support, a hospice nurse can provide care there.

Sometimes, when a patient is admitted to the hospital for a specific medical condition but then recommended for hospice care, they are often moved to an assisted living facility or nursing home, especially if the patient lives alone.

Older patients that are already in a nursing home and whose health is declining often get admitted to hospice. In that case, the hospice nurse visits the facility and can tend to the patient there.

There are also stand-alone hospice facilities serving those patients who can no longer live at home or who require acute, round-the-clock care. HospiceCare has two of these in-patient facilities to better serve West Virginia – our Hubbard Hospice House in Charleston and Peyton Hospice House in Lewisburg.

For more information about our in-home, long-term care and in-patient services, please call 304-768-8523 and ask to speak with one of our care navigators.

Luther Lasure, Executive Director of the Kanawha Valley Builders Association (left), and Fred Chandler, Business Manager for Charleston Building and Construction Trades Council (right), presented our CEO Chris Rawlings with a check for $10,000 yesterday from their 32nd Annual KVBA Labor-Management Golf Scramble.

We are truly grateful for the WV State Building Trades’ continued generous support, which had totaled $134,500 since 2002. Thanks to such strong community partnerships, HospiceCare is able to serve all our patients at their time of greatest need regardless of their ability to pay.

Specialized education allows our nurse practitioners to offer our hospice and palliative care patients and their families a full range of services beyond routine care, such as health promotion, disease prevention, education and counseling. NPs can even teach patients and their caregivers new self-care techniques that better support and possibly improve their health and daily living.
