Industrial Seed Oils Are Making Us Sick 🤢
Very, very sick.
We have gotten so far away from eating food in the form God created it that we sometimes don’t even recognize how incredibly processed our food supply has become.
For generations, people cooked with traditional fats such as extra virgin olive oil, coconut oil, butter, ghee, and animal fats. Today, soybean, canola, corn, cottonseed, safflower, sunflower, and other refined oils are absolutely everywhere, particularly in packaged, fried, fast, and ultra-processed foods.
And please add MARGARINE to the conversation. 🧈
I am a huge believer in asking a very simple question about our food:
How far has this food traveled from God’s creation to my plate?
The farther we move away from whole foods and toward an ultra-processed diet, the more concerned I become.
How Are Industrial Seed Oils Made? 😬
Many conventional refined oils undergo multiple processing steps before reaching the bottle.
Seeds may be heated and mechanically processed, solvents such as hexane may be used during extraction, and the resulting oil can then undergo refining, bleaching, and deodorization.
That is a VERY different product from simply pressing an olive and collecting its oil.
And here’s another piece of the puzzle that doesn’t get nearly enough attention:
OXIDATION.
Polyunsaturated fats are more susceptible to oxidation than more saturated fats, particularly when exposed to heat, oxygen, and light. Repeatedly heating cooking oil, something that can happen with commercial deep fryers, can further degrade the oil and create oxidation products.
This is one reason I am especially cautious about fried restaurant food.
But This Conversation Is Bigger Than One Bottle of Oil
One of the biggest problems with industrial oils is where we encounter them.
Crackers.
Chips.
Salad dressings.
Mayonnaise.
Frozen foods.
Protein bars.
Coffee creamers.
Restaurant meals.
Fast food.
Packaged baked goods.
Sauces and condiments.
They are EVERYWHERE.
And when you dramatically reduce industrial seed oils, something else often happens automatically:
You dramatically reduce ultra-processed food.
THAT is huge.
Instead of obsessing over calories, I want people to start looking at ingredients.
Turn the package around.
Read the label.
Ask yourself:
Could I reasonably make something resembling this food in my own kitchen?
What About Omega-6 and Omega-3?
Our bodies need essential fatty acids, including both omega-6 and omega-3 fats. But the modern Western diet tends to provide plenty of omega-6 while many people don’t consume nearly enough omega-3-rich foods.
From a holistic perspective, I don’t believe the answer is fearing fat.
Our bodies NEED fat.
Fat is involved in our cell membranes, energy production, absorption of fat-soluble vitamins, and normal hormone production and function.
The goal isn’t LOW FAT.
The goal is choosing better sources of fat and better-quality FOOD.
What Do I Use Instead? 🫒🥑🥥
In my own kitchen, I would rather reach for foods and fats that are closer to their natural state:
🫒 Extra virgin olive oil
🥑 Avocado and avocado oil
🥥 Coconut oil
🧈 Real butter
✨ Ghee
🥩 Traditionally rendered animal fats
🐟 Wild-caught fatty fish
🥜 Nuts and seeds
🌱 Flax and chia
🥚 Quality eggs
And whenever possible, I choose whole, minimally processed foods instead of something manufactured in a factory with an ingredient list a mile long.
How Do I Start?
Don’t make yourself crazy trying to overhaul your entire kitchen overnight.
Start with your pantry.
Read your labels.
Cook more meals at home.
Reduce fast food and deep-fried restaurant food.
Choose whole foods.
Eat more omega-3-rich foods.
Buy the best-quality ingredients your budget reasonably allows.
And stop being afraid of REAL FOOD.
Our bodies are extraordinarily complex, beautifully designed creations. I believe we honor them by nourishing them with foods that are as close as reasonably possible to the way God provided them.
You don’t need perfection. You need awareness.
Every time you turn a package around and read the ingredients, every time you cook dinner instead of opening a box, and every time you choose something grown, raised, harvested, pressed, or prepared simply, you are taking another step toward becoming the steward of your own health.
Do your research. Read your labels. Know what you’re putting into your body. And never stop asking questions. 🌿
