Interventional medicine is a team sport. Radiation protection should be too.
Physicians aren’t the only members of the team exposed to scatter radiation.
Nurses, technologists, scrub staff, anesthesia teams and others spend their careers working in and around fluoroscopy, and effective radiation protection needs to consider everyone in the room.
In our Tallahassee study, the sedation nurse measured an average dose of 0.092 mrem per case.
At 300 procedures per year, that equates to approximately 27.6 mrem of occupational exposure annually from those procedures alone.
That’s well below the 5,000 mrem annual occupational dose limit, but we believe the goal shouldn’t simply be staying below a limit.
The goal should be reducing unnecessary exposure whenever we can.
