Last week, teams from across MUSC got a closer look at some pretty impressive surgical tools during Robot Week.

The annual event brings surgeons, residents, fellows, nurses and other team members together to train on robotic-assisted systems, spend time at the controls and see how they’re being used across different specialties.

Throughout the week, they worked through techniques used in surgeries and procedures, asked questions and learned from colleagues along the way.

As these systems continue to advance, Robot Week gives our teams the opportunity to keep building their skills and bring what they learn back to the patients they care for.

When Dr. Kenneth Tew came to MUSC more than 20 years ago, he brought with him decades of experience in cancer research and an interest in what could be built here in South Carolina.

Since then, he’s helped grow research at MUSC, taught thousands of medical students and worked through the SmartState Program to bring researchers and new opportunities to the state.

Now preparing for retirement, Tew is looking back at where his career has taken him and what he hopes to see continue.

The microbes living in our gut may be tiny, but Dr. Mindy Engevik believes they could hold some big clues about human health.

At MUSC, her lab is studying how they interact with the body and whether we could one day harness them to better understand and treat disease.

Her research has earned national attention, but it’s only one part of what drives her.

Engevik has also made it a priority to mentor young women in science and open doors for those coming behind her, just as other women in the field did for her.

It was a hot one on campus yesterday, so popsicles were in order! ☀️

Members of our Student Government Association (SGA) and Office of Student Engagement (OSE) teams spent the afternoon out in the Charleston heat, welcoming students back, handing out sweet treats from King of Pops - Charleston and sharing what’s happening at MUSC this fall.

With classes starting next week, more students are making their way back to campus and there’s already a lot on the calendar.

More than 430 people came together last Friday for our second annual Project IMPACT Community Engagement Symposium, bringing MUSC team members and organizations from across our community into one room.

The day was all about learning from each other and making connections. Attendees joined panel conversations, heard from keynote speaker Dr. Marvella Ford and spent time getting to know the people, programs and organizations working across our community.

It was a chance to share what’s working, talk about where more support is needed and find new ways to work together.

Pancreatic cancer has long been one of the most difficult cancers to treat. But researchers are making progress.

Dr. William Hawkins from MUSC Hollings Cancer Center recently joined SC Public Radio’s Health Focus to talk about some of the advances he’s seeing in the field, including drugs that target KRAS mutations, personalized cancer vaccines and new approaches to finding pancreatic cancer earlier.

“We still have a lot more work to do,” Hawkins said. But after decades of research, he says there is good reason for optimism about where the field is headed.

MUSC is proud to welcome Terri L. Warholak, Ph.D., R.Ph., FAPhA, as the next dean of the MUSC College of Pharmacy.

Dr. Warholak joins MUSC from the University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy in St. Louis, where she serves as dean and professor of the St. Louis College of Pharmacy. She brings extensive experience in pharmacy education, research, medication safety and academic leadership.

As she looks ahead to her new role, Dr. Warholak said she is excited about the opportunity to "connect pharmacy education and research with clinical practice in ways that improve care and expand what pharmacists can do for patients."

At the MUSC College of Health Professions, students in the Anesthesia for Nurses (AFN) program develop those skills through a curriculum that brings together evidence-based education, experience and simulation.

In the lab, students can practice anesthesia techniques, respond to clinical scenarios and strengthen their decision-making in a controlled environment as they prepare for patient care.

Saying “no” to a research study doesn't always mean saying “no” to help.

That's what Dr. Erin McClure, Dr. Kelly Barth and their MUSC colleagues at the MUSC Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences found when they looked more closely at patients who chose not to participate in a study after being treated for an opioid overdose.

Many of those patients still wanted treatment for substance use. For some, it simply wasn't the right time.

By understanding what was behind those decisions, the team hopes to find better ways to connect with patients and make research easier for more people to take part in.
