I think I'm finally ready to reclaim the "Artist" title, which isn't much of a stretch considering my whole life's work centers around creation, transformation, and bringing new life into the world.

I started this piece months ago and eventually set it aside. Sometimes things need time to breathe before they're ready to be finished, so I’m bringing it back to the workspace. I'm posting it here, so y’all can hold me accountable to actually finish it. 😁 Consider this Step 1.

What have you set aside that might be ready to breathe again?

One year ago today, I washed my mother’s lifeless body, massaged shea butter into her skin, lovingly dressed her in one of her favorite cotton gowns, and whispered prayers of safe travels to her departing soul.

Grief has a strange way of making time feel both impossibly fast and unbearably slow. How has it already been a year? 365 days? It feels like I’ve lived through several different versions of myself since September 5, 2025.

Learning how to sit with grief, and how to hold memories without allowing them to swallow me whole, has been arduous work.

I survived so many firsts without her.
My first birthday. My first Mother’s Day. My first New Year. And perhaps one of the hardest things was watching the world keep moving when my entire world had completely changed.

That’s the strange thing about grief, it doesn’t stop life. Life keeps happening alongside it. And somewhere in the middle of all that living, I realized I wasn’t simply enduring the loss of my mother, I was being reshaped by it.

I found wounds in myself that needed tending. I found strength I didn’t know I had. I learned how to choose myself differently. I learned how to let people go. I learned how to sit with myself. I learned that I could fall apart and still find my way back to myself.

Today is a significant milestone and I can finally say this without minimizing how hard it has been; I survived my first year without my mother...
Not perfectly.
Not gracefully.
Not without breaking down.
Not without questioning myself.
Not without moments when the grief completely knocked the wind out of me, but I survived.

And I’m still here.

Today, I’m not only remembering my mother, I'm honoring her life. I’m honoring her memory and I’m honoring the woman I have become while learning how to live in a world without her physical presence in it.

Through all the breaking, rebuilding, grieving, growing, releasing, and becoming… I am learning how to make a home within myself.

Mommy, I love you.🌹

WE’VE SEEN THE RECALLS.🛑🚨
BUT HAVE YOU EVER SEEN A RECALL ON MOTHER’S MILK?

Let’s talk about it...

In recent weeks, headlines have been filled with recalls on foods, infant formulas, and everyday essential products. Safety concerns, contamination, and factory oversights leave families constantly second guessing what’s on store shelves.

Human milk is a living biological substance.💦 It carries natural antibodies, custom nutrients, and protective factors that adapt directly to a baby's needs... no barcode, no processing plant, and no factory recall required.

As we honor Black Breastfeeding Week, this conversation needs to go far beyond the basic headline. Let's also talk about food sovereignty.
Let's talk about maternal health.
Let's talk about corporate food systems.
Let's talk about access.
Let's acknowledging the deep history of Black women feeding babies, including the exploitation of wet nurses during enslavement. And let's talk about why protecting, supporting, and normalizing Black breastfeeding still matters today.

Breastfeeding isn't just a personal choice, it’s about whether our society actively builds the infrastructure to support Black mothers who choose to feed their children this way.

There is power in human milk.
There is power in informed choice.
And there is power in knowing our history.

Happy Black Breastfeeding Week, Charlotte & Mecklenburg County! 🤱🏾✨

This year, we’re making HISTORY!

Not only did we secure a proclamation from the City of Charlotte, but for the very first time EVER, we have also secured a proclamation from Mecklenburg County, officially recognizing August 25–31, as Black Breastfeeding Week in Mecklenburg County! 🥳🙌🏿

A massive thank you to Commissioner Mark Jerrell and the Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners for standing in the gap and recognizing our community.

And a special thank you to Councilwoman Renee Johnson, Dr. Charlitta Hatch, and every advocate who made a call, sent an email, showed up, spoke up, and helped push this historic recognition forward.

This is what looks like in action.

When doors closed, our advocates built new ones. When support was needed, our community stepped up. When our voices needed to be heard, we used them... because our community has always known how to take care of our own.🙏🏿

Happy Black Breastfeeding Week, Queen City! 🤱🏾💦🖤

🚨 EPISODE 5 IS LIVE! 🚨

Some stories are born from survival. Others from love. Jacquelyn's is born from both.

In this episode of What Are You Birthing?, Jacquelyn shares her journey from surviving war-torn Liberia🇱🇷 at age seven and living in a refugee camp, to rebuilding her life in the U.S. Today, as a mother of 3, nurse and floral designer, she turns past survival into present beauty.

Jacquelyn’s story proves that what happens to us does not define what comes from us.

Sometimes the people who bring the most beauty into the world are the ones who survived the hardest seasons to do it.

Hearing Jacquelyn reflect on surviving war-torn Liberia at just 7 years old, spending a year in a refugee camp in a neighboring country, and eventually rebuilding her life in the U.S. left me deeply moved.

Guided by her mother’s love, her faith in God, and her love for science and creativity, she became a nurse, a mother of three, and the founder of a flourishing floral business.💐

Our conversation also brought a beautiful full-circle moment. I had the opportunity to thank her for the floral arrangement she created for my mother’s casket, a powerful testament to how her art heals and honors lives.

🎥 Here’s a sneak peek into Episode 5 of What Are You Birthing? The full episode drops tomorrow!

Charlotte, I need your help.🙏🏿

For the past eight years, I have submitted a proclamation to the City of Charlotte City of Charlotte recognizing Black Breastfeeding Week.

This year, for the first time, that proclamation was declined.

What was especially concerning was that the initial response offered no explanation for the denial. After following up and publicly asking for clarification, I was told the request would be re-reviewed, but as of today, I still do not have a final answer.

And Black Breastfeeding Week begins August 25.

This is bigger than a piece of paper.

A proclamation is a public acknowledgment that the experiences, disparities, advocacy, and work surrounding Black maternal and infant health matter in our city.

Black Breastfeeding Week exists because Black families continue to face unique barriers to breastfeeding, maternal care, access, support, and equitable health outcomes.

For eight years, Charlotte has joined us in recognizing that.

We are asking them to do so again.

If you believe Black mothers, Black babies, breastfeeding equity, and Black maternal health deserve to be publicly recognized, please respectfully contact the City of Charlotte and Mayor’s Office and ask them to reconsider and approve the Black Breastfeeding Week proclamation.

You can also share this carousel so our community understands what is happening.

We have only a few days.

Black Breastfeeding Week: August 25–31. 🤱🏾🫶🏾
