New podcast episode! 🎧 Why should chiropractic be your first choice instead of your last resort? In "Why Chiropractic Should Come First," we dig into the risks of medications and surgery, why chiropractic care is a safe, gentle, and cost-effective place to start, and the words of Atlas Orthogonal founder Dr. Roy Sweat: "They are the alternative people, not us."

Most people never think about how their body is positioned while they sleep. If you wake up with a stiff neck, a nagging ache in your lower back, or a hand that feels numb before you’re even out of bed, the position you sleep in might be working against your spine every night without you realizing...

Headaches, dizziness, and pressure at the base of the skull can feel like three separate problems.

For some people, they are. For others, the timing and pattern may suggest that it is worth looking at the symptoms together.

A careful history helps us understand what started first, what tends to appear at the same time, and what has already been evaluated.

If you have been trying to make sense of a similar pattern, I created a five-minute observation guide for recurring headaches, dizziness, neck discomfort, and pressure at the base of the skull.

Comment ATLAS and I will send you the 5-Step Upper Neck Self-Check.

When headaches continue after you have tried medications or therapy, it is understandable to wonder what else could be contributing.

One area I consider is the upper neck, where the head meets the spine. The joints and other tissues around the atlas can sometimes become a source of pain. Nerves may carry those pain signals from the upper neck into the head, where you feel them as a headache.
Atlas Orthogonal care focuses on evaluating this area. An evaluation can help determine whether an upper neck concern may be relevant to your headaches. If you have tried several approaches and still have headaches, understanding what has been evaluated can help you choose a clearer next step.

If you want to organize your symptoms and the questions you have about them, comment ATLAS. We will send you our free 5-Step Upper Neck Self-Check guide.

The atlas is the first bone in your neck, just beneath your skull. Atlas Orthogonal care uses a specialized instrument designed to deliver a gentle, precisely directed impulse to this area.

The instrument’s tip rests lightly against the skin near the atlas. It transmits a brief mechanical wave through the tip, with very little movement of the tip itself. This impulse is intended to help adjust the atlas.

The adjustment is performed with your head supported, without manually twisting or cracking your neck.

If you have a question you would like me to cover in a future “Ask Dr. Ritchie” video, leave it in the comments or send me a DM.

If recurring headaches, dizziness, neck discomfort, or pressure at the base of the skull sound familiar, I created a five-minute observation guide to help you notice the pattern more clearly.

When migraines or dizziness keep interrupting your plans, it can be difficult to explain the full picture during an appointment.

That is why I created the free 5-Step Upper Neck Self-Check. It gives you a way to pause, notice what you have been experiencing, and organize questions about whether the upper neck should be evaluated. The guide cannot determine what is causing your symptoms, but it can help you prepare for a more informed conversation.

If you would like a clearer starting point for that conversation, comment ATLAS, and we will send you the guide.

Propping a child on one hip while you cook dinner, answer the door, or just walk across a room, is one of the most natural movements a parent or caregiver makes. But that same natural habit, repeated day after day, can eventually reshape how your spine and hips carry your own weight.

When symptoms have been present for a long time, people often begin organizing their lives around them without realizing how much has changed.

They stop making plans too far ahead. They keep an exit strategy in mind. They wonder how they will feel tomorrow before agreeing to something today.

Those details matter when I take a history. I want to understand the migraine, dizziness, or neck discomfort, but I also want to understand what the person has stopped doing because of it.

For me, progress should connect back to everyday life: work, family, driving, exercise, sleep, and the ability to make plans with more confidence.

Atlas Orthogonal is precise—but that does not mean it is automatically appropriate for everyone with headaches, dizziness, or neck pain.

That distinction matters.

When someone comes into my office, my first goal is to determine whether the upper cervical spine appears relevant to what they are experiencing.

That requires history, examination, and appropriate imaging—not assumptions based on a list of symptoms.

If the findings suggest Atlas Orthogonal care may be appropriate, we can discuss what care would look like and establish clear expectations.

If I do not believe I can help, I will tell you.

If you have been dealing with persistent symptoms and want to find out whether this approach may be appropriate for your case, call (704) 919-0057 to schedule an evaluation.
