When Lori Hawes lost her son Cody, she found a way to honor his memory by serving people whose journeys looked a lot like his.

Through Cody's Crew's annual Bags of Hope outreach, volunteers assembled 100 care packages filled with essentials, snacks, handwritten notes of encouragement, and health supplies for people experiencing homelessness in Asheville and Charlotte.

NC MedAssist was honored to support this year's effort through Project Dispensing Hope: WNC, providing over-the-counter health and hygiene items for each bag.

"This is how I keep my son's memory alive," Lori shared.

Her story is a powerful reminder that hope often begins with one person choosing to show up.

After a stroke left Eustorgio unable to walk or speak, his family did everything they could to care for him. They worked extra jobs, stretched every dollar, and still struggled to afford the medications that were essential to his recovery.

“Before coming to NC MedAssist, we were drowning,” said his daughter, Amanda. “We barely had enough money for even a fraction of the medications he needed. We didn’t have money for food, rent, or bills. Every day felt like another uphill battle.”

Through NC MedAssist's Free Pharmacy Program, Eustorgio now receives those medications at no cost, delivered straight to his home.

"NC MedAssist didn't just bring medicine to our home, “said Amanda, “it brought hope back into our lives."
