MYTH: Every child with autism dislikes social interaction.

REALITY: Social needs vary from person to person. Many children with autism enjoy friendships and connections; they may simply communicate, interact, or build relationships differently.

Summer can be a season of fun, but for many children with autism, it can also bring big changes: new routines, different schedules, sensory overload, travel, camps, and unexpected transitions.

At Autism Charlotte, we know that these changes can be both exciting and challenging for families.

Parents, you are not alone.

A few simple supports can make summer feel more manageable: create a visual schedule, build in quiet time, prepare your child for changes ahead of time, keep familiar comfort items nearby, and give yourself permission to adjust plans when needed.

Visiting busy places during off-peak hours can create a more sensory-friendly and enjoyable experience for children and families living with autism. Fewer crowds, less noise, and shorter wait times can help reduce stress and overwhelm.

Try visiting during quieter times:

🌳 Parks before peak afternoon hours
🖼️ Museums on weekdays
🍽️ Restaurants during non-rush hours

Looking for sensory-friendly things to do in Charlotte this summer? ☀️💙

Here are five local places helping create more welcoming experiences for families living with autism:

• Discovery Place Kids - Huntersville offers sensory-friendly hours every Sunday from 2:00 to 4:30 PM, along with sensory backpacks that include noise-canceling headphones, toys, and manipulatives.

• Children’s Theatre of Charlotte hosts sensory-friendly performances with adjusted lighting and sound for a more comfortable theatre experience.

• The Keith Family YMCA Accessible Playground provides an inclusive space where children of all abilities can play and explore together.

• NASCAR Hall of Fame partners with KultureCity to offer sensory bags with noise-canceling headphones, fidgets, and other supportive items for guests who may need accommodations.

• ImaginOn offers a sensory-friendly hour every Monday from 9:00 to 10:00 AM with softer lighting, quiet spaces, sensory supports, and sensory-friendly storytimes twice each month.
