Atrium Health is bringing medical care directly to people experiencing homelessness in Charlotte through its Care Everywhere Street Medicine Project. Through recurring outreach to encampments and outdoor sites, care teams meet patients where they are—reducing barriers like transportation, access and trust.

Clinicians deliver immediate, hands-on care in the field, including medications, testing and wound care, while connecting patients to housing and support services.

“By removing common barriers and being a reliable presence, we are able to connect with people who might otherwise remain disconnected from the health care system,” said Dr. Cortlyn Brown, medical director of the Atrium Health Care Everywhere Street Medicine Project and an associate professor of emergency medicine at Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center.

He ran a half marathon with cancer growing in his leg.

Rob is a former college athlete who has always pushed himself: whether that’s on the court, in the gym or toward his next goal. But during training for a half marathon and a HYROX competition, something didn’t feel right in his leg. He crossed the finish line of both, before learning he had osteosarcoma, a rare bone cancer.

At Atrium Health Levine Cancer, Rob underwent chemotherapy and limb-salvage surgery to remove the tumor while preserving his hip and knee joints. His journey wasn’t without challenges. After surgery, a serious setback required an emergency repair, one Rob says his care team “pulled off a miracle.”

Today, Rob is in remission and focused on a new goal: walking independently again. He also volunteered in a clinical trial to help advance the future of sarcoma care. Through it all, he’s carried the same determination that once drove him to compete, now it’s fueling every step forward.

Sometimes your body sends you a message and it’s worth listening.

For news anchor Jamie Boll WBTV, his cancer journey began with what he’s described as a “check engine light” moment — a sign that something wasn’t right.

After being diagnosed with cancer in his neck, Jamie remained committed to sharing the news with the Charlotte community and continued to work through treatment. Now he’s celebrating two years since completing that treatment. He says he tracked that milestone on a whiteboard on his desk. He’s now using his platform to help others, reminding us all: “Any bump, lump, spot or sore — get it checked.”

We’re honored Jamie trusted Atrium Health Levine Cancer with his care, and we’re grateful he continues to use his platform to raise awareness and encourage others to listen to their own “check engine light.”

Here’s to survivorship, awareness and the power of speaking up. 💙

At first glance, a 1,200 plus day Duolingo streak might seem like a fun personal quirk. But for Dr. Brent Matthews, it says a lot about his deep commitment to all things in his life – family, friends, and his patients.

As a surgeon, chair for the Department of Surgery at Wake Forest University School of Medicine, and vice president of surgical specialties for Atrium Health, Dr. Matthews is known for precision, preparation and putting patients first. His dedication to daily routines is evident in his work as a surgeon, and the devotion he demonstrates toward family and long-standing friendships influences his leadership style — marked by collaboration, humility, and genuine respect for everyone.

As a devoted husband and father of three, his values guide the decisions he’s made throughout his career, grounding his leadership in impact over recognition.

Dr. Matthews recently served as president of the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), where he focused on connecting surgeons to purpose — advancing education, expanding global surgical outreach and strengthening lifelong learning.

We’re proud to have Dr. Matthews at Atrium Health — a leader whose personal values and professional work are deeply aligned.

Ed has faced five cancer diagnoses and a stroke in just the last five years. That’s more than most people experience in a lifetime. But if you ask Ed, he’ll tell you his journey isn’t just about what he’s faced, it’s about how he chooses to keep going.

Ed was first diagnosed with stage 4 prostate cancer in 2021. He soon learned it had spread, impacting his bones, liver, pancreas and lungs. Then, during recovery from surgery, he experienced a stroke.

Despite the health challenges he’s faced, Ed continues to live fully—spending time outdoors, bird watching, fishing, gardening and making people laugh (he proudly calls himself a “practical joker”). He starts his mornings with 80-minute workouts, building strength, balance and resilience one day at a time.

Through Atrium Health Levine Cancer’s Senior Oncology Program, Ed got the personalized support he needed. The team helped him manage pain, strengthen his body, support his mental health and create a plan for nutrition and daily routines. What brings Ed joy these days is simple: being alive, welcoming new adventures, learning something new and making someone happy — dogs included.
