At just 7 months old, Niaomi “Nia” Hudson faced a battle no child should have to endure.
What began as a mother's intuition that something wasn't right led to a diagnosis of Wilms tumor, a rare kidney cancer. Over the next two years, Nia underwent emergency surgery, chemotherapy, radiation and countless hospital visits. When the cancer returned just months after her first treatment ended, she and her family faced the challenge all over again with remarkable strength and resilience.
Throughout it all, Nia found joy in creativity. Painting, coloring and crafts became more than activities. They became a source of comfort, normalcy and self-expression during long days of treatment. With the support of the Arts in Health and child life teams at Novant Health Hemby Children's Hospital, Nia was able to keep doing what every child deserves to do: be a kid.
Her family says the care extended far beyond medicine. From making Christmas special during treatment to helping navigate emotional moments with compassion, the team created an environment filled with encouragement, kindness and hope.
Today, Nia is cancer-free, has rung the bell and had her port removed. Now 3 years old, she loves bubbles, baby dolls, Elsa and creating colorful works of art. 💗
Her journey is a testament to the power of a mother's advocacy, the resilience of a child and the impact of compassionate pediatric care.
