🌟 Vocalize Your Future 🌟

Ever notice how some children need a few extra seconds to answer a question?
That pause may be doing important work.

Listening comprehension isn't just about hearing words—it's about processing them. Children need time to absorb information, understand meaning, organize their thoughts, and formulate a response.

Giving children a little extra time to respond can:
✨ Reduce frustration
✨ Support understanding
✨ Encourage confidence in communication
✨ Create more meaningful conversations

Sometimes, one of the best ways to support communication is simply to slow down and allow understanding to happen.

Because before children can confidently express themselves, they need the opportunity to fully understand what they're hearing.

👂 Understand more.
💬 Express more.
🤝 Connect more.

Understanding is the first step toward expression—and expression is how we vocalize our future.

💙 Values aren’t tested when things are easy. They’re revealed in the small moments- the careful attention given to a child’s question, the encouragement given when progress feels slow, the commitment to showing up, day after day, for the individuals and families who trust us with their care.

Those moments may not always be visible, but they’re what make our mission possible.

✨ What’s a value you try to live by every day?

🗣️ Why are more young children struggling to communicate?

Through the more than 2,000 screenings we conduct each year, our clinicians are seeing a concerning trend: approximately 38% of local preschoolers show signs of communication delays—nearly double pre-pandemic levels.

The good news? Early intervention can make a life-changing difference. 💡 What parents should know:
✅ Ages 0–5 are a critical window for brain and language development
✅ Delays in speech, language, and early literacy skills can impact learning, relationships, and school readiness
✅ Signs that shouldn't be ignored include limited vocabulary, difficulty following directions, frustration when communicating, or challenges expressing wants and needs
✅ Simple activities like reading together, talking throughout the day, singing songs, and limiting passive screen time can help support communication development

We see the impact of communication delays every day, and we're committed to advancing the conversation around early childhood communication development.

To help families better understand why these delays are occurring and what's at stake for young children, our Director of Speech-Language Operations, Liza Stahnke, shared insights from what we're seeing in our community in a national industry publication. 📖 Read her article, Elusive Words: Confronting the Post-Pandemic Skills Gap: https://leader.pubs.asha.org/do/10.1044/leader.FTR1.29052024.slp-andemic-delays.42/full/

💬 Parents, we'd love to hear from you. Have you noticed changes in your child's communication skills over the past few years?

Share your thoughts in the comments—and if this post could help another parent, educator, or caregiver, please share it.

💙 Patient Spotlight: The Sound of a Dream Come True 💙

Like many immigrant parents, Lucia came to the United States hoping to build a better future for her daughter, María. When María was diagnosed with severe hearing loss, that future suddenly felt uncertain.

Through María's school audiologist, the family was connected with Charlotte Speech and Hearing Center, where our team helped them navigate a path forward and secure custom hearing aids that once felt out of reach.

Reflecting on the day María received her hearing aids, Lucia shared: "She heard rain falling outside for the first time and asked us to be quiet so she could listen. That was when I truly realized my daughter could hear. I cried tears of joy."

Stories like María's remind us that hearing care is about more than devices. It's about opening doors, creating opportunities, and making life-changing moments possible. 💫

Before we can connect to the world at large, we have to understand it.

💙 Listening comprehension is an invaluable skill for children, helping them make sense of what they hear. This allows confidence to flourish by giving them the tools to understand instruction in classrooms, express themselves clearly, and build relationships with peers.

✨ The more confident children become, the more they can shape the future they desire and reach their true potential.

️Don’t let speech difficulties now, define your life later. Charlotte Speech and Hearing Center is here to help.

Be heard. Vocalize your future! 🗣
