Love pickleball? Your Achilles tendon might have a few things to say about that. 👟🥒🏓

As more adults have discovered pickleball, our physicians began noticing a rise in Achilles tendon injuries among players.

So we asked an important question: Is pickleball causing more Achilles ruptures, or are more people simply playing the sport?

A recent OCRI study found that more than 80% of pickleball-related Achilles tendon ruptures occurred in people over 50.
But don't worry—the lesson here isn't to stop playing.

In fact, staying active is one of the best things you can do for your health. The key is to stretch and prepare your body for the quick starts, stops, pivots, and lunges that make pickleball so much fun.

Before your next match:
âś… Warm up properly
âś… Build strength and balance off the court
âś… Wear supportive court shoes
âś… Pay attention to Achilles pain or swelling

Our goal isn't to keep you off the court. It's to help you stay on it!

The future of orthopedic care is driven by research, innovation, and the exchange of ideas.

The OrthoCarolina Research Institute is now accepting abstract submissions for the 2026 Oscar Miller Day Symposium. We invite residents, fellows, researchers, and orthopedic professionals to share their work and contribute to meaningful discussions that help advance musculoskeletal care.

Oscar Miller Day has served as a cornerstone of orthopedic education for more than four decades, bringing together clinicians, researchers, and healthcare professionals from across the region to learn, collaborate, and shape the future of patient care.

Submit your abstract and be part of the conversation driving the next generation of orthopedic innovation: https://orthocarolinaresearch.org/newsroom/call-for-abstracts-oscar-miller-day-2026/

Dr. Bryan Loeffler, upper extremity surgeon and co-founder of the Reconstructive Center for Lost Limbs at OrthoCarolina, recently served as the keynote speaker at the Virginia Orthopaedic Society Annual Meeting in Roanoke, VA, presenting on “State of the Art Bionic Reconstruction of the Amputated Limb.” His presentation highlighted emerging advancements in bionic reconstruction techniques and the evolving intersection of orthopedic surgery, prosthetic innovation, and patient-centered functional restoration.

As research and technology continue to reshape the possibilities for limb salvage and amputation care, multidisciplinary collaboration remains critical to improving outcomes and restoring quality of life for patients worldwide.

Our research doesn't just study outcomes — it helps improve them.

At the OrthoCarolina Research Institute (OCRI), collaboration between Drs. Bob Anderson and Samuel Ford and our Orthopedic Foot & Ankle Fellows continues to demonstrate how research directly informs the evolution of patient care.

In this featured 2015 publication, ligamentous injuries associated with ankle fractures were closely examined, establishing a key relationship between deltoid injury and late-stage instability. These findings have since helped refine operative protocols for high-demand athletic populations.

Work like this reflects the ongoing mission of OCRI: to generate data-driven insights that continue to advance the understanding and treatment of complex orthopedic injuries, and ultimately improve outcomes for patients.

From Taipei to Tuscany to Tampa, BreCON 2026 brought together a global community of experts committed to advancing the care of upper limb amputees, and we’re proud to have been at the center of it. 🌎🦾

As the largest international conference dedicated to upper limb amputation management, this year’s meeting was held in Charlotte and highlighted the power of multidisciplinary collaboration. Under the direction of Dr. Glenn Gaston and Dr. Bryan Loeffler, hand surgeons and co-founders of the Reconstructive Center for Lost Limbs at OrthoCarolina, the OCRI team hosted a world-class program that united surgeons, therapists, prosthetists, and mental health professionals from across the globe.

With keynote addresses from thought leaders, Dr. Oskar Aszmann and Dr. Max Ortiz Catalan, and in-depth discussions on targeted muscle reinnervation (TMR), osseointegration (OI), team-based models of care, and the use of virtual reality for phantom limb pain, BreCON continues to drive meaningful progress in both research and clinical practice.

OCRI is committed to advancing orthopedic innovation through collaboration, research, and education, improving outcomes for patients worldwide.

We want to give a huge thank you to everyone who attended, spoke and sponsored this event. BReCON 2026 wouldn't have been possible without you!

This story highlights something we see time and again in surgical care: how closely connected the human body is, and how critical awareness in the operating room can be.

For hand surgeons like Glenn Gaston, MD, and Randall McKnight, MD, treating limb difference and complex upper extremity conditions means looking beyond a single diagnosis and understanding the patient as a whole. That connection between patient care and research continues to expand what we know, helping refine how we approach surgical decision-making and long-term outcomes.

Every case at OrthoCarolina contributes to a broader clinical understanding—helping advance more informed, connected, and personalized care for the patients we serve.
