Why is Joint Attention Important?
When a child is actively engaging with you, they can follow what you are saying and doing. This skill is vital for developing:
- Communication skills
- Social interaction
- Cognitive development
Examples & Strategies:
- Blocks: Join them and hold blocks close to your face to label and model; talk about sizes, colors, or actions like “on,” “off,” or “fell” based on the play.
- Environmental awareness: If they are looking at a squirrel outside, chime in with phrases like “look, squirrel!” or “it’s climbing up the tree.”
- Cars: While playing with the cars, use fun sounds like “vroom vroom” or “roll” or “go”.
- Reading: Point to pictures and turn it into a peekaboo activity with the pictures in the book.
- Bubbles: Pause after blowing bubbles, to let the child look or gesture before you blow more.
