UV Safety Awareness Month

☀️What is broad spectrum sunscreen?
FDA meaning: The sunscreen can protect you from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) rays.

☀️Why you want broad spectrum sunscreen?
It can protect your skin from the sun’s UVA (aging) rays and UVB (burning) rays, which helps prevent:
Skin cancer, Early skin aging (premature age spots, wrinkles, and sagging skin), Sunburn

☀️What is SPF?
FDA meaning: How well a sunscreen protects you from sunburn.
To simplify things, you may want to think of the sun protection factor (SPF) as the “sunburn protection factor.”

☀️About SPF numbers
Another confusing thing about SPF is the number that follows it. This number tells you how much UVB light (the burning rays) a sunscreen can filter out.

Here’s what the science tells us about how much UVB light different SPF’s can filter out:

🧴SPF 15: 93% of the sun’s UVB rays
🧴SPF 30: 97% of the sun’s UVB rays

Dermatology Care of Charlotte recommends using an SPF 30 or higher. Call to schedule your annual skin screening now.

☀️July UV Safety Month☀️

American Academy of Dermatology recommendations for picking out a Sunscreen:

🧴Broad spectrum: The words “broad spectrum” means that the sunscreen can protect your skin from both types of harmful UV rays — the UVA rays and the UVB rays.

🧴SPF 30 or higher: The American Academy of Dermatology recommends that you select a sunscreen with an SPF rating of 30 or higher.

🧴Water resistant: Dermatologists also recommend that you look for the words “water resistant.” This tells you that the sunscreen will stay on wet or sweaty skin for a while before you need to reapply. Water resistance lasts either 40 or 80 minutes. Not all sunscreens offer water resistance.

☀️July is UV Safety Awareness Month☀️

What to wear to protect your skin from the sun:

☀️Lightweight and long-sleeved shirts and pants. It’s important to cover up as much of your skin as possible when spending time outdoors. When selecting clothing, avoid fabrics with a loose or open weave, such as lace. In addition, dark colors offer more protection than light colors. In addition, if you’re at the beach or pool, keep in mind that dry clothing offers more sun protection than wet clothing.

☀️Sunglasses with UV protection. Sunglasses are an important part of your sun-protective wardrobe. When purchasing sunglasses, always look for lenses that offer UV protection. Lenses that appear dark do not necessarily offer UV protection, so make sure to read the label before purchasing.

☀️A wide-brimmed hat. A hat is a simple and effective way to cover up your face and neck. When selecting a hat, choose one that has a wide brim, which will protect your ears, as well as your head and neck. Avoid baseball hats or straw hats with holes, as these are not as effective in protecting you outdoors.

☀️Shoes that cover your feet. However, if you’re wearing sandals or flip-flops or going barefoot, be sure to apply sunscreen to all exposed skin.

June is Acne Awareness Month

Some Self-Care Tips to Reduce Acne, from the American Academy of Dermatology:

🫧Keep your skin clean.
Gently wash your face up to twice daily and after sweating. Choose a gentle, non-abrasive cleanser. Apply it with your fingertips, as scrubbing with washcloths, sponges, and other tools can irritate your skin.

🧴Choose the right skin care.
Use gentle skin care products and ones that say “alcohol-free” on the label. Avoid products that can irritate your skin, including astringents, toners, and exfoliants. These products can dry your skin and make acne appear worse.

🛀Shampoo regularly.
The oil from your hair can cause acne on your forehead. If you have oily hair, shampoo more often than you do now and keep your hair away from your face.

💆🏻‍♀️Stick to your treatment.
Trying new acne treatments too often can irritate your skin and cause breakouts. Give your treatment time to work. It may take several weeks to few months before you see a difference.

🙅🏼‍♀️Keep your hands off.
Touching your face throughout the day can cause acne to flare. While it can be tempting to pick, pop, or squeeze your acne, doing so will make the acne take longer to clear and increase your risk for scarring and dark spots called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

☀️Stay out of the sun and tanning beds.
Along with increasing your risk for skin cancer, tanning damages your skin and can worsen acne. Some acne medications can also make your skin very sensitive to damaging ultraviolet rays from the sun and tanning beds.
