The facelift debate isn’t going away. But maybe we’re asking the wrong question.
Deep plane vs. SMAS. One technique vs. another. Who gets the “best” result?
As surgeons, we’re always going to have preferences—and healthy academic debate is a good thing.
But when professional disagreement turns into “my technique is superior,” patients can lose sight of what actually matters:
Good judgment. Good technique. Patient selection. Safety. And a surgeon who knows what is right for that patient.
I have techniques I prefer. That doesn’t mean every other approach is wrong—or that a great surgeon using a different technique can’t achieve an excellent result.
We should be educating patients, not confusing them.
We should be debating ideas, not tearing down colleagues.
So I’m curious: when it comes to facelift surgery, does the technique matter more—or does the surgeon matter more?
