What exactly is a Medicare Advantage plan?

Medicare Advantage, also called Part C, is another way to receive your Medicare Part A and Part B benefits. These plans are offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare.

Plan details can vary, including:

• Provider networks
• Prescription drug coverage
• Costs
• Service areas
• Prior authorization or referral rules
• Additional benefits

Before choosing a plan, look beyond the extra benefits and review how the health coverage itself works for you.

Check your doctors, hospitals, prescriptions, pharmacies, costs, and coverage rules.

Compare the health coverage first.

Prescription drug coverage can change from year to year, even when your medications stay the same.

During your Medicare review, take time to check:

• Are your medications still on the plan’s formulary?
• Have any drug tiers or coverage rules changed?
• Is your pharmacy still in the plan’s network?
• Could using a preferred pharmacy affect your costs?

Reviewing these details each year can help you understand changes before you need your next refill.

Your medications may stay the same, but your coverage can change.

Take a few minutes to review the whole picture.

Choosing a Medicare plan before checking your doctors can lead to an unwanted surprise.

A familiar insurance company name does not mean every doctor, specialist, or hospital participates in every plan that company offers.

Before enrolling, check the exact plan you are considering and verify:

• Your primary care doctor
• Your specialists
• Your preferred hospitals
• Any other providers that are important to your care

Provider networks can vary by plan and can change over time, so it’s a good idea to confirm provider participation directly when making your decision.

The plan matters, not just the name on the insurance card.

Taking a few minutes to check your providers before choosing can help you make a more informed Medicare decision.

Turning 65 while you’re still working can make Medicare enrollment more complicated.

Some people with current employer group health coverage may be able to delay certain parts of Medicare without a late enrollment penalty. But the rules can depend on the type of coverage you have and your employment situation.

Before making a decision, ask:

• Is my coverage based on current employment?
• Which coverage pays first?
• How could enrolling in Medicare affect my HSA?
• What happens to coverage for my spouse or dependents?

COBRA and retiree coverage follow different Medicare rules, so don’t assume they work the same as active employer coverage.

If you’re approaching 65 and still working, confirm how the Medicare rules apply to your situation before making changes to your coverage.

Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage are two different ways to receive Medicare coverage.

Original Medicare includes Part A and Part B. You can use any doctor or hospital that takes Medicare anywhere in the United States. You may choose separate Part D drug coverage and may be able to purchase Medicare Supplement insurance to help with certain out-of-pocket costs.

Medicare Advantage is offered by private companies approved by Medicare. These plans provide Part A and Part B benefits, usually use plan networks and rules, and many include drug coverage. Benefits and costs vary by plan and location.

Neither path is automatically right for everyone. Compare your doctors, prescriptions, costs, coverage rules, travel needs, other coverage, and comfort with networks.

Before choosing, write down what matters most to you and compare both paths carefully.done

The Medicare alphabet becomes easier when each letter has one simple job.

Part A helps cover inpatient hospital care and certain related services.

Part B helps cover doctors’ and other providers’ services, outpatient care, durable medical equipment, and many preventive services.

Part C is Medicare Advantage. It is another way to receive your Part A and Part B benefits through a private plan approved by Medicare. Many plans also include Part D, but plan rules and benefits vary.

Part D helps cover prescription drugs.

The letters explain the parts of Medicare, but they do not tell you which coverage choice fits your situation. Your doctors, prescriptions, other coverage, health needs, and budget still matter.

Save this post for the next time the Medicare letters start running together.

MYTH: Medicare covers everything.

FACT: Medicare covers many important health care services, but it doesn't cover everything, and you may still have out-of-pocket costs.

For example, Original Medicare generally doesn't cover routine dental care, routine eye exams for prescription glasses, hearing aids and fitting exams, or long-term care. There can be exceptions in certain situations.

Other Medicare coverage may help with some services that Original Medicare doesn't cover, but benefits, costs, and rules can vary.

The practical lesson is simple: don't assume you're covered. Take time to understand what's covered, what you may pay, and which services are important to you.

Save this post as a reminder to review your coverage before you need care.

Turning 65? It’s a good idea to start thinking about Medicare before your birthday arrives.

For most people, the Medicare Initial Enrollment Period lasts 7 months. It begins 3 months before the month you turn 65, includes your birthday month, and continues for 3 months afterward.

There is an important exception. If your birthday is on the first day of the month, Medicare uses a slightly different timeline.

Still working at 65? Your situation may also be different. If you or your spouse have group health plan coverage based on current employment, you may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period that allows you to delay Part B without a late enrollment penalty. COBRA and retiree coverage are not treated the same as coverage based on current employment.

The important thing is not to assume that everyone should enroll at exactly the same time.

Planning ahead gives you time to understand your Medicare enrollment dates and how your current coverage affects your decisions.

Have Medicare questions? Let’s talk.

Medicare rules and enrollment timing can vary based on individual circumstances.
