A conversation I had this week got me thinking about how often we hear, “One leg is shorter than the other.”
But there’s an important question that can get overlooked:
Is the leg actually shorter or is the body creating the appearance of a leg length difference?
With scoliosis, changes in pelvic position, spinal rotation, and the way someone is standing can make one leg appear shorter even when the bones themselves are the same length.
On the other hand, someone can have a true structural leg length difference that may be contributing to how their spine and pelvis are adapting.
Those are two very different things — and they shouldn’t necessarily be approached the same way.
So if you’ve been told you have a “short leg,” especially if you also have scoliosis, it may be worth asking:
Is this a true structural difference, or a functional difference related to how I’m standing and moving?
That distinction can change how we look at the whole picture.
Have you ever been told you have a leg length discrepancy? 👇
