Shaming in childhood for ADHD is common due to misunderstandings and misconceptions about the condition. Many people still view ADHD as a lack of discipline or willpower, rather than a neurodevelopmental disorder. As a result, caregivers, teachers, and even peers may shame children with ADHD in an attempt to "correct" their behavior. For neurodivergent women, this experience can be especially damaging because ADHD symptoms may present differently than in males, leading to delayed diagnoses and inadequate support. The shame experienced in childhood can have lasting effects on self-esteem, mental health, and interpersonal relationships, further complicating the challenges faced by neurodivergent women in adulthood.

Women with ADHD are four times more likely to have anxiety than those without ADHD. The connection between anxiety and ADHD is complex. Many women with ADHD are initially diagnosed with anxiety, while the adhd is missed.

Most ADHD women have been taught to mask, resulting in anxiety, depression, exhaustion, and relationships with toxic individuals.

Historically, neurodivergent people are treated as if they are the problem. As a young therapist, I ran social skills groups under this very premise, which frankly makes me cringe. I now know Social skills training inhibits authenticity and reinforces masking in neurodivergent children. Read about this in my most recent newsletter or adhd women.

You don't need social skills training. Take it from a neuroaffirming therapist.
