To expand access to outpatient care in Central Virginia, UVA Health has acquired the approximately 365,000-square-foot former State Farm operations center in the Pantops area of Albemarle County.

Located at 1500 State Farm Blvd., the property is near U.S. 250 and Interstate 64 and comes with more than 1,200 surface parking spaces, making it a convenient location for patients.

The purchase of the facility is one of the first major initiatives to come from our recently launched 10-year space planning initiative, Expanding Care, Enhancing Lives, which seeks to meet the steadily growing demand for both outpatient and inpatient care in the years ahead.

We'll undergo a master planning process over the next six months to determine which clinical services are best suited for the location — and the renovations needed to accommodate them. The goal is to have the facility ready to begin serving patients in approximately two years.

🐝 Our BEE (Being Excellent Everyday) Award is an award dedicated to celebrating the team members who work alongside our nurses delivering expert, compassionate care.

Meet our latest honorees: University Medical Center (UMC) patient care technicians Cassidy Bianchi and Devora Henderson; UVA Health Culpeper Medical Center surgical technician Kaitlyn McEwen; UMC patient safety companion Robert Holmes; and UVA Health Haymarket Medical Center Plant Engineering's Eric Daniels, Stephen Dotson, David Friend, and Robert Hook.

Cassidy was nominated by a fellow team member who says she goes above and beyond to create partnership with her colleagues and patients. As she continues on her path to receiving a nursing degree, her coworker thinks Cassidy "will be an exceptional nurse because of the way she takes the time to help, motivate, and offer a sense of humility in the way she cares for others."

Devora has been with UVA Health for less than a year, but has already left quite an impression on her fellow team members as a member of the Float Team. She received recognition from colleagues on two units for her outstanding teamwork and adaptability, demonstrating "extraordinary examples of compassion and patient-centered care."

Kaitlyn was nominated by a clinical unit coordinator for her "exceptional dedication, professionalism, clinical expertise, and unwavering commitment to the patients, families, and fellow team members in the Family Birth Center."

Robert was paired with a pediatric patient whose underlying conditions made it so the child did not always make safe decisions on their own. His impact on the patient was so profound that when the decision was made to withdraw care, Robert was invited by the patient's family to say goodbye. Robert continues to honor the child's memory. Recently, he purchased a specialty tricycle for the pediatric units and donated it in the patient’s name.

When an issue with the air handlers could've affected operations, the Plant Engineering team demonstrated exceptional teamwork and responsiveness — minimizing disruption and ensuring patient care continues safely. "They go above — literally — and beyond to locate the origin of concern," marveled their nominator.

We're incredibly proud to honor team members like Cassidy, Devora, Kaitlyn, Robert and the Haymarket Plant Engineering team who go above and beyond in their commitment to serving our patient community.

🏈 💕 Two of our breast cancer patients and our UVA Comprehensive Cancer Center team were welcomed onto the field at Scott Stadium during Virginia Football's homecoming game vs. Syracuse on Oct. 10.

Katie Forkin was diagnosed with breast cancer after her first mammogram at age 40 and underwent a bilateral mastectomy and chemotherapy. During her treatment, she was able to keep running and even ran the Berlin Marathon, setting a new marathon personal record. She has been cancer-free since last December. Katie is also part of our UVA Health team — she's an associate professor of anesthesiology and division chief of liver transplant.

Katie Layne is a southwest Virginia native who now lives in Goochland. When self-examination revealed a lump in February, Katie, who was just 39, sought treatment at UVA Comprehensive Cancer Center. She enrolled in a clinical trial and had chemotherapy and a double mastectomy. Just 6 months after her diagnosis, she was cancer-free. She will continue immunotherapy for 1 year and will also have a hysterectomy later this year.

We are incredibly proud to celebrate these two honorees and our entire cancer team during !

💙Family has always come first for the Childers family, who live in Roanoke. Brothers Andrew and Jordan were born with a rare genetic condition, Bardet-Biedl syndrome, which often leads to kidney disease. Jordan was only 5 when his kidneys started failing, and they turned to UVA Health, where his mother, Mary Beth, gave him a kidney.

Years later, Andrew's kidneys began to fail. This time it was his father, Mark, who gave him the gift of life. "Learning that both our sons would need kidney transplants was obviously very scary. Through a lot of help, great doctors, our faith, we've managed to navigate it, and things have turned out really well," he says.

The Childers just celebrated Andrew's 10-year transplant anniversary and continue to share their story to inspire others to consider living kidney donation. 💚

For people living with substance use disorder, finding an effective treatment can take time.

Medications, counseling and behavioral therapies can help many people. But substance use disorder affects everyone differently, and not every treatment works the same way for every person. For some people, effective treatment options remain limited.

Our researchers are exploring whether a technology that uses precisely targeted sound waves could eventually give these patients another option.
