In addition to the many pressures and judgments women already face during pregnancy, this mom was planning a VBAC and an out of hospital one to boot. She informed herself and prepared for the labor and birth she wanted, research and statistics on her side.

Congratulations to this family on the birth of their son!

A change in the birth plan can bring challenge and stress but this couple navigated each development with courage and optimism; welcoming their baby so sweetly, surrounded by providers that listened and acted on their wishes.

We are grateful to UVA University Hospital for their clear commitment to shared decision making and their awareness and sensitivity to the needs of those transferring in from the community birth setting.

This mom wrote "I had such a positive experience of transferring to UVA from the birth center. Of course, I wish that I had given birth at the center, but I'm grateful that Emily was able to accompany me and stay with me at the hospital until after the baby was born. I thought the way the UVA staff, doctors, and nurses handled the transfer was ideal. They were very kind & compassionate about my situation."
