August is National Wellness Awareness Month, and hearing health deserves a spot in the larger wellness conversation.

Clear hearing supports connection, confidence, and everyday well-being… all of which are core components of feeling your best.

If you’ve been putting off a hearing check, consider this your wellness reminder. We hope we hear from you this month!

We associate hearing damage with prolonged noise exposure, aging, years of loud concerts, or heavy machinery. But a single blast event can affect the ears in ways that aren't always obvious. 💥

Eardrum injuries are the most visible consequence. But even without any visible damage, the inner ear and the brain's ability to process sound can both be impacted. Dizziness, difficulty understanding speech in noisy environments, and persistent ringing are all things that can follow a blast exposure… sometimes immediately, sometimes gradually. 😖

If you or someone you know has been near an explosion, a gunshot, or any sudden high-intensity sound event, a hearing and balance evaluation is worthwhile. Even if everything *seems* fine.

Early evaluation gives you a clear picture of where things stand and what, if anything, needs support.

We are here when you are ready! 👂

Let me bust a myth that comes up in my clinic more than almost any other. 👇

Hearing loss is not just an “older person” problem!

I know that's what most people assume. The stereotype is pretty ingrained: an elderly person cupping their hand to their ear. And yes, age-related hearing loss is real and incredibly common.

But at Rivanna Hearing Center, I see people of all ages.

Noise-induced hearing loss starts young! Sometimes in teenagers who have spent years with earbuds in at full volume. Genetics can also play a role that has nothing to do with age! Medical conditions, medications, and head injuries can affect hearing at any stage of life.

The reason this myth matters is that it keeps younger people from getting tested. They assume they're too young to have a problem, and so they wait. Sometimes for years. Sometimes until the damage is much harder to address. 😔

A baseline hearing test isn't just for people who are struggling. It's for anyone who wants to know where they stand and protect what they have!

If you've ever thought, "I'm too young to worry about this," this one's for you.

Share it with someone who needs to hear it. 👇

Tinnitus is often described as a ringing, buzzing, or humming sound that only you can hear.

It is not a sound in the environment but a sensation created within the ear or brain, often after stress, noise exposure, or even a head injury.

For many people, it can feel distracting or exhausting, especially when it first begins. 😵‍💫 One helpful tip is to notice what makes the sound feel louder or softer. Changes in stress, caffeine, or jaw tension can influence how tinnitus presents itself.

You are never alone in this experience. Understanding what tinnitus is can provide clarity, and support is always available. If the ringing has been lingering or affecting your daily life, we are here to help you find comfort, guidance, and a path toward relief! 🎧🌿

I’m definitely getting asked a lot more questions about cognition and hearing loss!

These questions are especially more common from concerned loved ones. They usually describe moments that have been bothering them for a while. Their mom asking the same question twice in one conversation. Their dad seeming confused or distant at family dinners. A parent who used to love being in the middle of everything, now sitting quietly at the edge of it.

The family starts wondering: is this the beginning of something serious? 😟
Nobody wants to be the one to say it out loud, but it’s so important to talk about.

What I often share with families in those moments is something that genuinely surprises them.

The brain and the ears are not separate systems. They are deeply connected. When the ears stop sending clear signals, the brain works harder to fill in the gaps. That effort is exhausting, and it can look, from the outside, a lot like confusion, withdrawal, or even memory loss.

It is not always what it appears to be.

Before any other conversation, it is worth knowing what the ears are actually doing. A hearing evaluation is quiet, painless, and takes less than an hour. And the information it gives a family can completely change the direction of the conversation they thought they needed to have.

If something has felt off lately and you are not sure what to make of it, this might be worth sharing with a family member. 👇

Happy National Friendship Day 🤍

It’s not a common day for us to recognize here at Rivanna Hearing Center. However, friendship is one of the first things that quietly changes when someone is living with untreated hearing loss. 💓

Not dramatically. Just gradually. The group dinners that start feeling exhausting. The phone calls that get shorter. The friend you used to laugh with for hours who you now see less because following the conversation in a noisy restaurant takes everything you have.

Most people don't connect those dots right away. They just think they've gotten a little more introverted, a little more tired, a little more home-bodied. But sometimes it isn't about personality. It's about energy. And hearing loss takes a lot of it.

Today feels like a good day to check in, not just with your friends, but with yourself. Are you showing up for the people you love the way you want to? If something has shifted, we'd love to help you figure out why. 💛

When it comes to hearing aids, the experience you receive matters just as much as the devices themselves. 🦻💛

Big‑box stores may seem convenient, but personalized care can make a world of difference. One helpful tip: always ask whether your hearing aids can be serviced anywhere, or if the programming is locked, it can impact your long‑term flexibility and support.

Our goal is simple 👉 to help you hear your best with guidance, comfort, and care that’s tailored to you. You deserve solutions that fit your life, not just your budget!

Back to school means a lot of firsts: new teacher, new classroom, new routines.
It also means school hearing screenings are right around the corner. 👂

Those screenings do important work. But they are designed to catch significant concerns, not to give a complete picture of how a child is actually hearing in a busy classroom.

If your child has ever been referred after a school screening, or if you have noticed them asking you to repeat yourself, turning up the volume, or struggling to follow directions in noisy environments, a full hearing evaluation is the next step.

A baseline evaluation at our practice gives you answers the school screening cannot. And early awareness always leads to better outcomes.

If you have been meaning to get this done before the school year gets busy, now is the time! 🍎
