🥵 Chaska is facing several seriously hot days—and sunscreen isn’t the only thing your skin may struggle with.

Heat, humidity, sweat, and friction can contribute to:

🔥 Heat rash
💦 Sweat-related breakouts
🩳 Chafing and irritated skin folds
☀️ Sunburn

A few ways to help your skin through the heat:

👕 Choose loose, breathable clothing
🚿 Rinse off sweat and change out of damp clothes
🧴 Apply broad-spectrum, water-resistant SPF 30+ and reapply at least every two hours outdoors—and after swimming or heavy sweating
🧊 Cool down promptly if your skin becomes prickly, itchy, or irritated
🙅 Avoid aggressively scrubbing sweaty or acne-prone skin

Seek medical care if a rash becomes painful, blistered, rapidly spreads, shows signs of infection, or isn’t improving.

Stay cool, Chaska! 😎 If a summer skin problem is putting a damper on your plans, Scenic Dermatology is here to help.

☀️ How much sunscreen should you actually use?

Applying enough sunscreen matters just as much as choosing the right SPF. This helpful graphic from JAMA Dermatology illustrates the “teaspoon rule” for covering exposed skin properly.

A few important reminders:

🧴 Apply sunscreen about 15 minutes before going outside
⏰ Reapply every 2 hours while outdoors
🏊 Reapply after swimming or sweating
👂 Don’t forget the ears, scalp, neck and tops of the feet
✅ Choose a sunscreen you will actually use consistently

No sunscreen blocks every UV ray, and a higher SPF does not eliminate the need to reapply.

New on the blog: Hypochlorous Acid Skincare 💦

HOCl sprays are everywhere right now: acne-prone skin, eczema-prone skin, sensitive skin, post-workout routines, “barrier support,” and the usual internet promise that one product might fix everything.

So we wrote the calm dermatologist version.

What hypochlorous acid may help with:
✅ gentle skin hygiene
✅ post-sweat cleansing
✅ irritation-prone routines
✅ simplifying an overcomplicated shelf

What it should not replace:
🚫 acne treatment
🚫 eczema or rosacea care
🚫 infection evaluation
🚫 a diagnosis when your skin is worsening

The mindset: helpful add-on, not miracle cure.

Skin calming spray is having a moment. 💦✨

Hypochlorous acid spray can be a nice little add-on for irritated, sweaty, acne-prone, or reactive skin — especially in summer when heat, sunscreen, sweat, pollen, and outdoor life are all teaming up on your face. ☀️🧴🌿😅

But let’s keep it real:

It can help calm redness and irritation. ✅
It can be gentle for many sensitive-skin routines. ✅
It may help reduce bacteria on the skin. ✅

It is NOT a miracle acne cure. 🚫
It is NOT a replacement for eczema or rosacea treatment. 🚫
It is NOT a reason to build a 14-step routine. 🚫

Derm rule: if your skin is angry, simplify first. Gentle cleanser, moisturizer, sunscreen, and then add extras carefully. 🧼🧴🛡️

Trendy can be useful. Trendy should not be chaotic. ✨

Hot take from your dermatologist: fake tanning is not “cheating.” It’s harm reduction. ☀️✨🧴

A real tan is not a sign that your skin is healthier. It’s a sign your skin has responded to UV exposure. That UV exposure is what increases risk of sunburn, premature aging, sun spots, and skin cancer over time. 😬🔥🧬

So yes, if you like a summer glow, a self-tanner is a much better choice than intentionally tanning outside or using a tanning bed. 🌴🌊☀️➡️🧴✨

But here’s the part people miss:

A fake tan does not protect you from the sun. 🚫🛡️☀️

You still need:
SPF 30+ 🧴
Shade 🌳
Hats 👒🧢
Sunglasses 🕶️
UPF clothing 👕
Reapplication ⏰

Fake the bronze. Protect the skin. ✨🤎🛡️

AAD recommends broad-spectrum, water-resistant SPF 30+ for sun protection, and Skin Cancer Foundation guidance says sunless tanners should not be relied on for sun protection.

☀️ SUNSCREEN UPDATE AVAILABLE ☀️

BEMT just entered the chat.

The FDA recently approved **bemotrizinol**, also called **BEMT**, a newer sunscreen filter that helps protect against both **UVA + UVB** rays.

Why people are talking about it:
✨ Newer sunscreen technology
🧴 Broad-spectrum UV protection
🌤️ Already used in other parts of the world
🔬 A big step forward for U.S. sunscreen options

But the basics still matter:

✅ Use broad-spectrum SPF 30+
✅ Reapply every 2 hours outdoors
✅ Don’t forget ears, neck, scalp part, and backs of hands
✅ Hats, shade, and UPF clothing still help a lot

BEMT is exciting, but no sunscreen is magic. The best sunscreen is still the one you will actually use consistently.

Questions about sunscreen, sun damage, or skin cancer prevention? We’re happy to help.
