I’m asking my friends to please take a few minutes to read this.
This is my nephew, Camden Maneely. He’s 17 years old, and this kid has already fought more battles than most of us will face in a lifetime.
Camden had his first open-heart surgery when he was just one week old. His heart stopped after a blood clot caused complications, he spent more than 30 days on ECMO, and before he was even two years old, he received a heart transplant.
Years later, Camden developed PTLD, a cancer associated with the anti-rejection medications he needed for his transplanted heart. He went through chemotherapy and beat it. Then the cancer came back—and he beat it again. He eventually underwent a bone marrow/stem cell transplant as well.
And now Camden is fighting again.
His transplanted heart is failing, and his kidneys are failing too. He is in New York City going through the process for a heart and kidney transplant.
But there’s another part of this story that I need some help with.
My brother Corey needs to be with his son.
Corey is self-employed. He doesn’t have paid family leave or vacation time to fall back on. If he isn’t home working, there is no money coming in. He has already spent weeks in New York City with Camden, and this could continue for months through waiting, transplantation and recovery.
I know my brother. Asking for help is about the last thing he ever wants to do. But I also know there is absolutely nowhere else he should be right now than beside his 17-year-old son.
I don’t want Corey lying awake in a hospital room wondering how he’s going to pay the bills back home. I don’t want him feeling like he has to choose between earning a living and being Camden’s dad when Camden needs him most.
