Just when you get one OCD theme under control, it’s common for another one to pop up! Exposure and Response Prevention (EXRP) teaches clients to respond to all OCD symptoms and themes the same, regardless of content. If you can be consistent even when OCD isn’t, you can stop the endless game.

Anxiety driven thoughts often tell people that what they’re thinking is so ridiculous or so awful that they should never tell anyone. Keeping these thoughts a secret can lead someone to delaying treatment for years, sometimes indefinitely. Talking about your thoughts out loud is a powerful first step towards healing.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy teaches clients to identify thinking errors that lead to emotional responses that are out of proportion to the situation. The Availability Bias is just that, if someone can easily remember a situation, a person, or in this case, a virus, they are more likely to believe that it’s important or threatening.

While there are currently 11 confirmed cases, there are thousands of articles, blogs, and social media posts, most of which are designed to trigger fear to increase clicks. That combined with more recent memories of the early days of Covid, creates the perfect storm for significantly overestimating individual risk.

Most people recognize that anxiety can cause muscle tension, even leading to muscle pain. The reverse is also true; tense muscles can increase anxiety. When muscles tense, blood pressure and heart rate increase. These autonomic nervous system reactions trigger anxiety, leading to more muscle tension. Over time, this creates a feedback loop, which perpetuates both muscle tension and anxiety. Learning to relax your muscles is an important part of managing anxiety. Try checking in with yourself a few times a day, noticing areas of tension in your body, and releasing it. Progressive muscle relaxation is an anxiety management skill that you can use to relax your body, and relax your mind!

HBO’s hospital drama, The Pitt, has devoted significant screen time to highlighting mental illness and substance abuse among healthcare providers, and the stigma associated with seeking help. We must work to end the stigma, and to remind those suffering in silence that help is available. If you need immediate assistance, call or text 988 to be connected with the national su***de and crisis lifeline. You are not alone.

People often engage in rumination, e.g. excessive worry, as an attempt to control events or people that they fundamentally cannot. If you find yourself worrying excessively about a situation or relationship in a way that does not move you closer to solving a problem, you may be engaging in rumination. Rumination can happen across different anxiety and related disorders, and is most commonly associated with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD).

John Cena stunned pro wrestling fans when he ended the last match of his career by tapping out. If you caught the match, you may have noticed the half smile that crept across his face at the end. He didn’t acquiesce, give up, or quit. He radically accepted the reality that his storied career was coming to an end, and made the decision to tap out on his own terms.

Radical acceptance is not approval, nor is it resignation. It’s the decision to not engage in a struggle with reality that cannot be changed. When we accept reality for what it is, rather than insist it be some way that it cannot, it frees us to make better decisions, and to turn suffering that feels unbearable into pain that is manageable.
