Summer scheduling is officially underway at Chatham Speech and Myo, and our therapists have been working diligently to accommodate as many families as possible.

We know summer often creates more flexibility for therapy appointments as school schedules, after-school activities, and homework routines begin to ease up. Many families use this time to prioritize speech, language, feeding, and myofunctional therapy services while schedules are more manageable.

If you have not yet scheduled your child’s summer appointments, we encourage you to contact the office soon, as limited time slots remain available.

If you are seeking a speech and language evaluation, please call the office and our team will do our best to get your child evaluated quickly so therapy can begin as soon as possible this summer.

We are looking forward to supporting your family this season.

Many parents are surprised when an orthodontic consultation leads to a referral for myofunctional therapy — especially when there are no speech concerns.

Orthodontists are often looking beyond the teeth themselves and may identify signs that functional patterns could have an influence on orthodontic outcomes over time.

This can include things like:
• mouth breathing
• improper tongue rest position
• improper swallowing patterns

If the underlying functional patterns are not addressed, the forces affecting the teeth may continue even after orthodontic treatment — potentially influencing long-term orthodontic stability.

Myofunctional therapy focuses on evaluating and correcting these patterns as part of a collaborative treatment approach.

If your child was recently referred for myofunctional therapy and you are not sure why, our office is happy to walk you through it.

Many parents instinctively want to help by saying things like “slow down,” “take a breath,” or “start over” when their child stutters. While well-intentioned, these types of comments can sometimes increase communication pressure instead of reducing it.

Often, one of the most supportive things caregivers can do is listen patiently, maintain natural eye contact, focus on the message rather than speech errors, and allow their children time to complete their thoughts.

Positive, low-pressure communication experiences can make a meaningful difference for children who stutter.

If you have concerns about your child’s fluency or communication confidence, our office is here to help.

Stuttering is about so much more than speech disruptions alone. Communication confidence, participation, comfort, and positive speaking experiences all matter too.

Our newest caregiver guide provides an overview of fluency therapy, understanding stuttering, goals of therapy, and when a fluency evaluation may be considered.

A special thank you to for putting together the thoughtful information included in this guide. We’re excited to continue sharing educational resources to help support children and families navigating communication challenges.

If you have concerns about your child’s fluency or communication confidence, our office is here to help.

Looking for free or low-cost ways to support reading, vocabulary, listening comprehension, and literacy skills at home? 📚

We rounded up a few helpful apps, websites, audiobooks, and reading platforms for kids — including read-aloud stories, ebooks, comprehension activities, and library resources.

These tools can be a great way to encourage language development while keeping reading engaging and accessible for different ages and interests.

Save this post so you can come back to these resources later! ✨

Special thanks to for organizing and sharing these resources with our community.

When we evaluate a child’s myofunctional skills, we have to look at the systems that support them.

That is why collaboration with a pediatric otolaryngologist like Dr. Blanco is so important.

From a myofunctional perspective, an unobstructed airway matters.

Enlarged tonsils and adenoids can contribute to nasal obstruction, mouth breathing, snoring, improper tongue rest position, poor food management, and disrupted sleep quality. When sleep quality and breathing are disrupted, children may show changes in attention, behavior, regulation, learning, and overall function.

This is why we value professional collaboration. Myofunctional therapists and otolaryngologists each see a different piece of the child’s functioning — and when those pieces are put together, families get a more comprehensive understanding of their child’s needs.

Our therapists also connect directly with Dr. Blanco before a patient attends an appointment to share updated clinical information and help support collaborative care.

We are grateful for professional relationships with providers like Dr. Blanco, whose work helps us better support the children and families we serve.
