What causes aging skin?

Aging skin isn’t skin that’s slowed down for no reason — our skin is incredibly intelligent. It’s never “broken”: it’s always doing the best thing for us in response to what’s going on inside our bodies as a whole. It’s true that our turnover rate slows down more and more as we age. This is because our circulation declines 1% per year from age 25 onward due to the above causes, which delivers fewer and fewer of the nutrients we need to keep our dermis (and epidermis) healthy.

If we force our turnover rate to increase by using retin-A, retinols, dermabrasion and/or chemicals without supplying more nutrients, we are going to accelerate aging rather than repair it. I do NOT recommend exfoliating on a daily basis for aging (OR for acne or hyperpigmentation, more on that later). The skin does not need to be traumatized to create more collagen.

Just like we know being overly critical and harsh with ourselves for the things we wish were different makes it harder for us to positively transform, traumatizing our skin with heavy exfoliation or toxic chemicals like hydroquinone and retinols will increase aging rather than repair it. Our skin is the only organ we can observe visibly and conditions that fall outside the range of healthy behaviors are signals that something is off balance internally, rather than misbehaviors that need to be corrected. This sounds like a simple mindset shift but it fundamentally changes how we relate to and treat our protective, hardworking meat-suit.

Reiki roughly translated means universal or life force energy today in Japanese — “rei” 𩄍 on its own means spirit, soul, ghost, divine, sacred; “ki” 氣 being something that can’t be seen but can cause change and be felt.

Shoden is a Japanese word that means first teachings. All of my reiki courses are in the Usui Reiki Ryoho tradition — this is reiki as it was first developed and taught in Japan as a practice for healing and personal development.

Do you:
— struggle to relax, calm your mind or feel grounded?
— feel the acute sense of something deeper missing from Western cultural perspectives that see humans as distinctly physical beings?
— want to feel comfortable being alone with yourself and with who you are as a person?
— know you are meant to be of service to others, but aren’t sure how?

You are not alone. My search for for peace and meaning is what brought me to reiki.
