A father of 11, Marshall developed a ruptured stomach ulcer that caused stool backup.

AT ADMISSION: Marshall required four surgeries in 20 days, then spent 30 days in the ICU. During hospitalization, he developed respiratory failure requiring intubation, and could not be weaned from the ventilator. He received a tracheostomy and feeding tube.

TREATMENT AT KINDRED: At Kindred Hospital Chattanooga, Marshall received rehabilitation therapy, speech therapy, dietitian support, respiratory therapy, and wound care. Despite difficult days and significant secretions, he was weaned from the ventilator.

OUTCOME: After a 61-day stay, Marshall was discharged and returned home with home health, excited to be around his children, grandchildren, and parents, to sit on his porch, and to go on double dates with his fiancée and best friends.

Pam went to the doctor for a hernia, and her doctor sent her to get surgery. Complications, including an ileus (a temporary paralysis of intestinal function) and severe sepsis, arose during surgery, and when Pam woke up, she was on life support in the ICU.

Pam had been diagnosed with sepsis, respiratory failure, pulmonary edema with pulmonary effusions, and an acute kidney injury. Pam was intubated and eventually received a tracheostomy. Additionally, she was given a PEG feeding tube. Pam later stated that she walked into the hospital for surgery, and when she woke up, she thought she might never walk again.

Pam was transferred to Kindred Hospital Chattanooga for further treatment. At Kindred, she received physical, occupational, and speech therapy; respiratory care for ventilator and trach management; dietitian consultations for tube feeding; and wound care. Pam was able to begin standing, and her confidence in walking again grew the more she stood. By Pam’s discharge date, she was able to switch to a normal diet. Additionally, Pam was weaned off the ventilator and decannulated.

Pam has one son and four grandchildren. She is a retired security guard and enjoys sitting on her porch swing, drinking coffee, and fishing (specifically for catfish). When Pam can go home, she is excited to spend time with her grandchildren and take one day at a time.

"Everyone has been wonderful to me," she said. "Everyone has been really nice. I have no complaints."

Gary suffered a heart attack and kidney failure, accompanied by cardiogenic shock and septic shock. He also had serotonin syndrome – a life-threatening drug reaction – which complicated matters. Gary was diagnosed with respiratory failure and hypoxia with comorbid conditions of encephalopathy, atrial fibrillation, heart failure, and malnutrition.

At the referring hospital, Gary received a tracheostomy and was placed on a ventilator. Additionally, he was given a PEG (feeding) tube. While at the hospital, Gary acquired pneumonia, which was treated with antibiotics.

Once he had transferred to Kindred Hospital Chattanooga, Gary received physical, occupational, and speech therapy, as well as wound care, respiratory care, and dietitian consultations. He also received feeding tube management and trach care. During his stay at Kindred Chattanooga, Gary was able to be weaned off of the ventilator. With speech therapy, Gary went from a nothing-by-mouth diet to a pureed/mildy-thick diet. Additionally, Gary was able to stand with an EVA walker and transitioned from passive range of motion to active range of motion on all limbs. Gary’s sacral wound also began to heal.

Gary is retired, has been married for 46 years, and has one daughter and son-in-law. He likes to play guitar and has been playing for years. He has been discharged to acute inpatient rehabilitation. Gary is very excited to get back to fishing and playing guitar!
