📍 When searching for assisted living, how much should location really matter?

More than you might think. Choosing a senior living community within about 15 minutes of home, work, or your everyday routine can make it easier to turn planned visits into ordinary moments together.

A quick lunch. Dropping off a favorite snack. Stopping by after running errands. Those smaller visits can help a loved one stay connected to the everyday lives of family while also giving families more opportunities to stay involved in their care.

At Morning Pointe Senior Living, we know there’s a lot for families to consider when exploring senior living options. This week’s Understanding Senior Living blog takes a closer look at why proximity deserves a place alongside care, services, and amenities, plus practical ways to evaluate location during your search.

💜 Meet Crystal, our Director of Nursing!

We’re excited to introduce you to Crystal, our Director of Nursing at The Lantern! Born and raised in Decatur, Tennessee, Crystal’s passion for caring for older adults began with her own family. Her close relationship with her grandmother and two years spent caring for her grandfather inspired her to pursue nursing and make a difference in the lives of others.

What she loves most about her role is seeing our residents smile and helping create a caring, loving environment for everyone who lives and works at The Lantern. She says her time here has helped her better understand the struggles others face and become even more empathetic and supportive.

Outside of work, Crystal is very family-oriented and considers her mother and grandmother her closest friends. She’s also a proud pet parent to two big fur babies! 🐾💜

We’re so grateful to have Crystal as part of our Lantern family and appreciate the compassion and heart she brings to her work every day! ✨

☀️💧 When temperatures climb, staying cool and hydrated becomes especially important for older adults.

Older adults can be more vulnerable to heat-related illness because the body may not adjust as quickly to sudden temperature changes. During periods of extreme heat, here are a few important reminders:

💧 Drink fluids regularly throughout the day.
🏠 Spend time in cool, air-conditioned spaces.
👕 Choose lightweight, loose-fitting clothing.
☀️ Limit strenuous outdoor activity during extreme heat.
⚠️ Watch for signs of heat-related illness, including dizziness, weakness, nausea or confusion.

At Morning Pointe Senior Living, our teams are keeping the heat in mind, too. Hydration carts and refreshing drinks help encourage fluids throughout the day, while ice pops, ice cream socials and other cool treats offer fun ways to beat the summer heat indoors. ❤️🍦

As high temperatures continue across much of the Southeast, remember to check in on the older adults in your life and help them stay cool, comfortable and hydrated.

🐾☀️ The “Dog Days of Summer” continue at The Lantern!

Our residents enjoyed a fun field trip to the pet store, where there was plenty to see and enjoy. From watching colorful fish glide through the aquatics section to getting up close with chatty parakeets, everyone had a wonderful time exploring the sights and sounds of the animal world. 🐟🦜

A little time around animals can bring so much curiosity, laughter, and joy. We loved seeing our residents enjoy this fun change of scenery and all the critter encounters along the way! 💙🐾

💪 A resident who once relied on a wheelchair can now walk 157 feet with a walker in two minutes.

With an individualized plan of care, consistent support, and in-house physical and occupational therapy, the resident gained strength and greater independence. Today, they can also independently manage dressing, self-care, toileting, and wheelchair use.

That progress means more than improved mobility. It means greater independence in everyday life. Stories like this are happening throughout Morning Pointe Senior Living, and they show why the right support, care, and encouragement can make such a meaningful difference.

This week’s Understanding Senior Living takes a closer look at this resident’s progress and how assisted living can support recovery and independence.
