Last call before the first day.

School starts next week, and this is the weekend most families realize what didn't get done. If an eye exam is on that list, we have a handful of spots left — but genuinely just a handful.

And if you're reading this thinking we'll just deal with it in October, that's four report-card weeks of a kid squinting at a whiteboard and not mentioning it, because kids almost never mention it. They assume everyone sees what they see.

A few things about Dr. Janat Mathew, since a lot of you haven't met her yet:

She completed training at Nova Southeastern University in South Florida. She's the one who'll spend the extra five minutes explaining what she's actually looking at on the retinal image, because she thinks you should get to see your own eyes. In her spare time, she enjoys nature walks and has recently discovered her love of paddleboarding!

Patients tell us the same thing about her over and over: she doesn't make you feel rushed.

She's taking new patients right now, and her schedule has room next week.

Let's talk astigmatism. It's one of the most common things we explain in exams, but most people have never actually heard how it works.

If you've never brought a child in for an eye exam, we’d love to walk you through it— start to finish, nothing left out.

Appointments last about 45 minutes. We talk to your child directly, at their eye level, instead of over their head. We use toys, 3D glasses, and their favorite cartoons to keep it fun. And they get real input on the frames, which turns out to matter a lot for whether the glasses actually get worn.

Our checklist involves depth perception, eye teaming — essential for fluid reading — measuring for glasses prescription, and the health of your child’s eyes, front to back.

Fall sports start before school does, and August is when we start hearing about eyes.
A finger to the eye in practice. A contact lens that won't come out. Dirt or a bug that went in and didn't come out. An eye that's red and getting redder, and now the whole family's wondering whether that's a Thursday-morning problem or an urgent-care-at-9pm problem.

Call us. We build our schedule to leave room for urgent eye concerns when we can, and we see new patients for them too. We're the ones with the equipment made specifically for eyes.

If something feels off, that's reason enough to pick up the phone.
