Honoring the Legacy of Malcolm Jamal Warner

From Theo Huxtable to Dr. AJ Austin, Malcolm Jamal Warner gave us characters that weren’t just memorable, they were meaningful.

As Theo on The Cosby Show, he helped break barriers by portraying a young Black teen navigating a learning difference, dyslexia, at a time when mental health and neurodiversity were rarely discussed on TV, especially in Black families. It was one of the first times we saw a child with special needs treated with empathy, humor, and respect in a prime-time sitcom.

Years later, Malcolm brought depth, brilliance, and compassion to his role as Dr. AJ Austin on The Resident. He played a Black male surgeon smart, complex, and deeply human, in a field where Black men are still vastly underrepresented. His character helped normalize vulnerability, grief, and emotional growth in medicine.

Malcolm Jamal Warner wasn’t just acting. He was using his gift to challenge stereotypes and open hearts.

As a parent of a neurodivergent child and a mental health professional, I’m grateful for what his work represented for us, for our kids, and for the culture.

Your legacy will continue to inspire. Rest in power, Malcolm.

It’s Monday and if you’re carrying trauma, it might feel like the weight of the world showed up with the alarm clock.

Trauma isn’t just about what happened. It’s about what’s still happening in your body, your mind, your relationships, and how you show up in the world. And mental health? It’s not about being “happy all the time” it’s about feeling safe enough to be real, to rest, to heal.

If you’re struggling today, you’re not broken, you’re responding to pain that deserves to be acknowledged, not ignored.

Be gentle with yourself this week. Healing isn’t linear, and Mondays don’t get to dictate your worth.

You’re doing better than you think.

07/17/2025

Let’s talk about positive thinking, real, honest, mental health-informed positive thinking.
It’s not about ignoring your struggles or pretending everything is great.
It’s about shifting the way you speak to yourself.
It’s saying:
“This is hard, but I’ve done hard things before.”
“I feel overwhelmed, but I don’t have to stay here.”
“I’m allowed to hope for better days.”

Positive thinking is a mental health tool not toxic positivity. It’s a way to build resilience, not suppress emotion.
You’re not broken for having hard days. But you are powerful for believing you can grow through them.

Virtual EMDR is on the rise!

Since the pandemic, more people are turning to online EMDR therapy and it’s working.

Many therapists now use virtual bilateral stimulation tools (like visual, audio, or even tactile cues) to help clients process trauma and anxiety from the comfort of home.

Technology is making healing more accessible than ever.

Have you tried virtual EMDR or are curious about it? Let’s talk about it!

Healing Trauma Across Cultures: EMDR for Diverse Clients

Trauma doesn’t discriminate and neither should healing.

EMDR therapy is a powerful, evidence-based approach that helps people process and release trauma without needing to relive every detail. It’s especially impactful for clients from diverse racial, cultural, and spiritual backgrounds, who may carry layers of generational, systemic, or identity-based trauma.

Whether you’re:
• An immigrant navigating a new world
• A person of color healing from racial trauma
• Part of a marginalized group whose story has been silenced
EMDR meets you where you are with respect, dignity, and cultural sensitivity.

“It’s not just about the trauma, it’s about honoring the whole person behind it.”

Let’s keep creating healing spaces that reflect the beautiful complexity of our clients’ identities.

Mid-Year Mental Health Check-In: How Are You Really Doing?
We’re halfway through the year! Now is a great time to pause and check in with yourself.

-Are your boundaries still working for you?
-What habits are helping or hurting your peace?
-Is it time to reassess your goals or expectations?

Give yourself permission to slow down, reset, and realign. Mental health isn’t a destination, it’s something we nurture daily.

What’s one thing you’re doing this week to protect your peace?

Neurodivergence Awareness is on the rise

More and more adults especially women and people of color are being diagnosed with ADHD, autism, sensory differences, or recognizing these traits in themselves later in life.

For many, these late diagnoses bring a mix of relief, grief, and clarity. It’s not that we were “too sensitive” or “lazy” we were misunderstood.

Understanding neurodivergence helps us rewrite the narrative. It’s not about being brokenit’s about seeing the beautiful differences in how our brains are wired.

Let’s keep spreading awareness, compassion, and support.

Nervous System Regulation: The Real Relationship Hack

Want better communication and deeper intimacy in your relationship? Start with your nervous system, not your partner’s behavior.

We’re finally learning that emotional safety isn’t just about what we say… it’s about how our bodies feel.

A regulated nervous system =
-Clearer communication
-Less reactivity
-More connection
-Deeper trust

Tools like breathwork, grounding, and understanding polyvagal theory are helping couples shift from constant conflict or shutdowns into real emotional safety.

Because love doesn’t grow in chaos. It grows in calm.

Have you and your partner explored nervous system work together?

Neurodivergence is Finally Being Seen Loud and Clear.

ADHD, autism, sensory processing differences, and PDA (Pathological Demand Avoidance) aren’t “new” but the awareness around them is finally catching up.

More women, people of color, and parents of neurodivergent kids are discovering that what they once thought were “personality quirks,” burnout, or anxiety… were signs of unrecognized neurodivergence.

-Late diagnoses are rising.
-Self-diagnosis is becoming a tool for empowerment and access.
-And the conversation around masking, overstimulation, and support is getting LOUDER.

This matters. Because when we understand the brain differently, we stop trying to “fix” people—and start building a world that fits them.

Have you seen this shift in your circles? Are you on your own journey with neurodivergence? comment below.

Mental Health & Juneteenth: Freedom Must Include Healing

As we celebrate Juneteenth, the emancipation of enslaved Black Americans we honor not only our ancestors’ resilience but also our right to heal.

Freedom is more than the absence of chains. It’s the right to feel safe in our minds, to rest without guilt, to break generational cycles, and to say “I need help” without shame.

Mental health is still a taboo topic in many Black communities, but healing is revolutionary. Therapy, community support, breathwork, rest, joy all of these are acts of resistance and liberation.

This Juneteenth, let’s remember:
-We are worthy of rest.
-We are allowed to feel.
-We deserve support.
-Our healing honors our ancestors.

Freedom looks like mental wellness too.

Trauma & Your Nervous System: What’s Really Going On?

Ever feel like you’re on edge for no reason… or completely shut down when things get tough? You might be experiencing a nervous system response.

Right now, Polyvagal Theory and nervous system regulation are making big waves in the mental health world. Why? Because trauma doesn’t just live in the mind it lives in the body too.

People are learning to recognize when they’re in fight, flight, freeze, or fawn mode and more importantly, how to return to safety.

Breathwork
Grounding techniques
Vagus nerve stimulation
Body-based practices

These are more than just trends they’re tools for healing, regulation, and long-term resilience.

Have you explored nervous system healing yet? Drop a 💚 if this is something you’re learning about too!
