One of the biggest misconceptions about magic is that people think it starts with a ritual.
I don’t think it does.
I think it starts much earlier than that.
It starts with attention.
Every day, you’re feeding something.
You’re feeding your fears or your faith.
You’re feeding your limitations or your possibilities.
You’re feeding the stories you tell yourself about who you are and what is possible for you.
Most people don’t realize how much power there is in what they repeatedly think about, talk about, expect, and emotionally invest in.
Your attention is not neutral.
Your emotions are not neutral.
Your beliefs are not neutral.
Your expectations are not neutral.
They are constantly influencing how you interpret the world, what opportunities you notice, what risks you avoid, what choices you make, and ultimately, the direction your life takes.
This is one of the reasons I love Hermetic philosophy so much.
It forces us to stop seeing ourselves as passive observers and start recognizing how often we are participating in the creation of our own experience.
Not through wishful thinking.
Not through fantasy.
But through attention.
Through repetition.
Through belief.
Through emotion.
Through expectation.
Most people think magic is something that happens during a ritual.
Hermeticists understood that magic is happening long before the candle is ever lit.
The question isn’t whether you’re practicing magic.
The question is:
What are you practicing?
