Happy Friyay! EVERYONE is talking about Medicare Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) right now... but what if you’re STILL WORKING PAST 65? 🤔
If you have employer group health insurance, AEP isn't necessarily meant for you right now. Instead, your timeline revolves around your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) or a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) when you eventually decide to retire or drop employer coverage. However, if you are working past 65 and thinking about claiming Social Security, here is how those TWO DECISIONS INTERSECT:
1️⃣ Automatic Part B Deductions: Once you claim Social Security benefits, your Medicare Part B premiums are automatically deducted directly from your monthly benefit check.
2️⃣ Watch Out for IRMAA: Still earning a solid salary while taking Social Security? Higher income (from 2 years prior) can trigger an IRMAA surcharge, raising your monthly Part B and Part D premiums.
3️⃣ The HSA Trap: Claiming Social Security automatically enrolls you in Medicare Part A. Once Part A is active, you can no longer contribute to a Health Savings Account (HSA)!
The Takeaway: Don't let the AEP noise distract you! If you're working past 65, your Medicare strategy is custom to your retirement timeline, employer coverage, and Social Security plans.
