Living with rheumatoid arthritis (RA)? A recent study of U.S. veterans with RA found that frailty — feeling weak, tired, or less steady on your feet — may help predict who is more likely to have a bone fracture. That's a good reminder that RA can affect more than your joints. Bone health matters too. Staying active as you are able and keeping up with your care visits are good steps to talk over with your doctor.

Sore knees, hips, or hands from osteoarthritis? The American College of Rheumatology just updated its guidance for treating this common joint condition. The big message: there is no one-size-fits-all plan. Exercise, learning how to manage your symptoms, and keeping a healthy weight remain the foundation of care. The updated guidance also encourages open talks between patients and their doctors about the benefits, risks, and personal preferences for each treatment.

If you have rheumatoid arthritis, you know it affects your joints — but did you know it can also weaken your bones? Ongoing inflammation from RA can raise the risk of fractures over time. The good news: a recent medical review found that modern RA treatments don't just ease joint pain, they can also help protect bone density, and some bone damage may even partly heal with effective treatment. That's a great reason to stay consistent with your treatment plan and talk with your doctor about your bone health, too. Worried about your joints or bones? New guidance for osteoarthritis came out this month, and the main message is an encouraging one: there is no single treatment path that fits every person. The American College of Rheumatology updated its recommendations for arthritis of the knee, hip, and hand, and the strongest advice still centers on staying physically active, learning day-to-day ways to manage symptoms, and working toward a healthy weight when that applies to you. The update also adds a few newer options that certain patients may want to ask their doctor about. Above all, it encourages patients and clinicians to decide together, based on your goals and what your joints need.

⏰ With rheumatoid arthritis, timing is everything.

Joint damage from RA can begin within the first two years — but modern treatments (DMARDs, biologics) can slow or stop it when started early. Don't wait for the pain to become unbearable.

September is Rheumatic Disease Awareness Month, and it arrives alongside refreshed guidance on osteoarthritis of the knee, hip, and hand from the American College of Rheumatology. One message stands out: movement is medicine. The updated guidance puts real weight behind regular exercise, and for the first time it highlights balance training as a helpful addition for knee and hip osteoarthritis. Stretching, strengthening, and steady aerobic activity can ease stiffness and help joints move better. The other theme is that no two people with arthritis are the same, so a plan built around your goals and your daily life works better than a one-size-fits-all approach.

If you live with rheumatoid arthritis, a sudden and intensely painful joint flare may not always be your RA acting up. A new review in Arthritis Research & Therapy suggests that rheumatoid arthritis and gout can show up in the same person more often than doctors once believed. The two were long treated as separate conditions, but researchers say the overlap may be underrecognized. That matters, because the two are managed very differently. Gout often comes on fast and starts in one joint, such as the big toe, while RA tends to affect matching joints on both sides of the body.

Not sure what's behind your joint pain? Ozark Rheumatology in Chesterfield is here to help — call to schedule a visit.

Background Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and gout are traditionally considered distinct diseases with differing pathogenic mechanisms, making their coexistence controversial. Emerging evidence suggests this overlap may be underestimated. This study aimed to evaluate their epidemiological association, ge...
