“It was such an honor to welcome the nerve surgery world to St. Louis for the 2026 WashU Nerve Course,” said Christopher Dy, MD, MPH.

The course brought together attendees and faculty from nine countries for expert talks, panel discussions, debates and hands-on anatomical dissections focused on the latest advances in nerve surgery.

Dr. Dy also reflected on the continued growth of the multidisciplinary peripheral nerve program at WashU Medicine. “It’s impressive to look at what the WashU Orthopedics and WashU Plastic Surgery teams have accomplished together, and exciting to think about where the field is headed next. I had so much fun directing the course alongside Dr. Mitch Pet.”

What does the future of AI in medicine actually look like?

According to Jason Strelzow, MD, it’s not about replacing physicians – it’s about giving expert clinicians better tools.

As Associate Editor for AI at the Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery (JBJS), Dr. Strelzow is helping lead national discussions around how artificial intelligence can improve patient care while keeping physician expertise at the center of medicine.

From predictive analytics to imaging and clinical documentation, AI is already changing health care. Leaders like Dr. Strelzow are helping ensure those changes happen thoughtfully, responsibly and with patients in mind.

Nearly 60% of stroke survivors experience lasting upper limb impairment.

WashU Medicine PM&R specialists and neurosurgeons are using vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) technology to help patients regain movement, strength and independence – even years after stroke. The therapy pairs rehabilitation exercises with gentle vagus nerve stimulation to help reinforce neural pathways connected to movement and recovery.

What if stronger bones could start before birth?

Arin Oestreich, PhD, in Guilak Lab is leading research focused on osteogenesis imperfecta (OI), also known as brittle bone disease – a condition that causes bones to break easily.

Her team is studying whether blocking a natural protein called myostatin could help improve muscle and bone strength, especially during early development.

In a recent study, the researchers found this approach improved bone size and muscle mass during pregnancy and lactation. The hope is that one day, these discoveries could lead to new treatments that improve bone health and quality of life for people living with brittle bone disease.

Research like this is helping move us closer to stronger futures for patients and families affected by OI.
