Whether you can give yourself a minute, an hour, a day, or a week, right now is a great time to find something to smile about in the present.

Urge Surfing is a great term and a helpful visual for riding out intense feelings and trying to change patterns of reactive or emotion-driven behaviors. Feelings pass wiithin half an hour when we can learn to ride them out, and we make better decisions when we get past the waves. Here’s how:

1. Notice the urge. Name it without judging yourself.
2. Pause. You don’t have to act on it right away.
3. Tune into your body. Where do you feel the urge? Notice the sensations.
4. Breathe and observe. Imagine the urge as a wave: it rises, peaks, and eventually falls.
5. Let it be. You don’t have to fight the urge or make it go away. Just notice it.
6. Choose your next step. Respond intentionally rather than automatically.

Remember: An urge is a feeling, not a command. You can ride the wave without acting on it.

✨Try this simple mindfulness practice!
👀➡️ZOOM IN on one point of focus to draw in your attention to something that brings you joy, compassion, curiosity….. Hold your attention there for a minute, and notice what that is like for you. Helpful during overwhelm.
And/or
➡️👀ZOOM OUT beyond your thoughts and notice an expanded view of your environment in a way that invites more perspective, awareness, wonder…. Hold your attention there for a minute and notice what that is like for you. Helpful during thought spirals/rumination.

✨This easy exercise helps you build two skills: mindfulness (awareness/control of where your attention goes) and state shifting (ability to move from distress to regulation). 💪❤️✨

👉Feeling capable and resilient comes from experience- moments of support and connection during a tough time, endurance through discomfort, joy of celebrating victories big and small, relief at finishing something hard💪
💕Self-care isn’t just about coping skills, it can also be connection with friends, with nature, and with our inner strengths✨

Being EMDR Certified and an Approved Consultant means a LOT of extra training and years of dedicated practice. And, it adds depth of understanding of trauma, a greater knowledge of trauma work, and a love of being a part of both the healing process for clients nd the leqrning process for other therapists❤️

I’m so excited to announce the launch of my new practice, Good Psychotherapy Services 🎉

After 17 great years at The Sibley Group, I’m stepping out on my own to build a practice centered on the work I love most: helping clients, parents, and clinicians navigate trauma and neurodivergence ✨

At GPS, I’ll be seeing clients virtually for therapy, parent coaching, and EMDR Intensives. I’ll also have limited openings for individual and group EMDR Consultation, and I’m expanding my trainings for therapists, schools, and organizations.
