What does a healthy “consequence” actually look like?I’ll tell you what it isn’t … it’s not withdrawing to scare them. Not giving them the silent treatment. Not threatening to leave so they finally choose you. It’s not matching their energy so they get a taste of their own medicine.. It means you stop protecting them from the natural impact of patterns that are hurting the relationship.If they disappear, you don’t endlessly pursue.If they avoid repair, you don’t repair for both of you.If they ask for space, you respect it, but create boundaries around what space means for both of you. And if they repeatedly can’t meet a relationship requirement, you decide what you’ll do rather than trying harder to convince them.That’s the difference between punishment and a boundary:Punishment tries to create pain so someone changes. A boundary changes your participation in a dynamic that no longer works for you.
