Congratulations to our outstanding PGY-3 residents (Class of 2027) for their exceptional presentations at the 2026 Resident Research Day hosted by the University of Illinois Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology. We are proud to celebrate the scholarly achievements of Amanda Fisher, MD; Katie Munson, MD; Nicole Zolman, MD; Kelly Kons, MD, MEd; Marika Maggos, MD; Denice Arnold, MD; and Stephan Buiter, MD, whose innovative research reflects a deep commitment to advancing women's health and improving patient care. Special thanks to their dedicated mentors, Dr. Catherine Wheatley, Residency Program Director, Dr. Catherine Ford, Associate Residency Program Director, and Dr. Quetzal A. Class, Director of Residency Research, for fostering a culture of academic excellence and inquiry. We were also honored to welcome our distinguished keynote speaker, Jody Steinauer, whose inspiring presentation on patient-centered care enriched this year's event. The future of academic obstetrics and gynecology is bright, and we are proud to support the next generation of clinician-scientists and leaders.

The inaugural class of the Obstetrics & Gynecology Betsey, Lucy, and Anarcha Editorial Mentorship Program was established in 2024. This year-long mentorship program includes virtual seminars, mentored peer reviews, editorial conference calls, and learning opportunities from peers, mentors, and journal editors. Named in honor of Betsey, Lucy, and Anarcha, the program serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of ensuring that injustices are never perpetuated against vulnerable populations, regardless of race, religion, s*x, or political affiliation, through research, education, and clinical practice. This year, our esteemed faculty member, Dr. Priyanka Gokhale, was recognized as a mentee in this distinguished program. Congratulations, Priyanka.

We are incredibly excited to share that the Center for Women’s Health has been recognized as the top clinic across all of ambulatory for Fiscal Year 26 in patient experience. Our Gold Star designation represents an achievement that speaks volumes about the care, compassion, and connection each of our OBGYN colleagues brings to their work every single day. Congratulations!

Congratulations to Ms. Kathleen Harmon CNM (Director of the Midwifery practice) and her team for wining the “Best Evidence-Based Practice Poster Winner for Nurses Week 2026” entitled “Standardization of Visitation to NICU Among Stable Mothers Following Delivery. Through this research the group evaluated quantifiable changes in time to initial maternal NICU visitation following vaginal delivery and c/section and assessed a standardized process to facilitate timely maternal NICU visitation following vaginal delivery and c/section.

Congratulations to our residents, fellows, and faculty mentors for an outstanding departmental turnout at the 8th Annual Women’s Health Research Day. It was wonderful to see such strong participation, and the breadth of work presented truly reflects the collaborative spirit of our research community. Congratulations as well to Dr. Sydney Dautel on receiving a poster award in the fellow category!

Congratulations to our biomedical engineering team! Last week they were named semifinalists in the Global Health Initiative Challenge, and this week they earned second place in the Blaze Venture Competition.

Their project is a smartphone application that combines colorimetry and AI to measure blood loss on perineal pads. The tool is being developed to help quantify uterine bleeding in a wide range of situations, including menstruation, abortion, and pregnancy, even outside of clinical settings.

Serving as Head since 2021, Dr. Buhimschi is honored to build on UIC OB-GYN’s 100+ year legacy of training exceptional physicians and advancing women’s health. Our department is dedicated to excellent patient care, medical education, and innovative research, while advocating for equitable access to health and supporting historically marginalized communities in Chicago.
