Losing weight without trying? Unintentional weight loss can sometimes be connected to digestive health, but there are many possible causes.
GI conditions may reduce your appetite, make eating uncomfortable, interfere with nutrient absorption, or cause ongoing losses from vomiting or diarrhea. Possible causes include ulcers, celiac disease, inflammatory bowel disease, pancreatic conditions, chronic infections, swallowing problems, or delayed stomach emptying. Less commonly, unexplained weight loss can be associated with cancer.
Other conditions, including thyroid disease, diabetes, medication effects, and other illnesses, can also cause weight loss. Losing about 5–10% of your body weight over 6–12 months without trying is generally considered significant, but you should seek care sooner if the weight loss is rapid or continuing.
It is especially important to get evaluated if weight loss occurs with early fullness, persistent abdominal pain, diarrhea, vomiting, blood or black stools, anemia, fever, jaundice, or difficulty swallowing.
Unexplained weight loss should not be ignored. Your doctor can help determine the cause and whether blood tests, imaging, an endoscopy, or other testing may be appropriate.
