Ok, yes I have a lot of certifications and I love to learn. But to know if someone is a really excellent doula, I want to know:

🌀 how often do you let yourself experience uncertainty and discomfort?
🌀 what do you do to nourish your nervous system?
🌀 how does ritual inform your work?
🌀 what do you do after a really hard birth?

I want to hear about the therapy and the bodywork, the creative practice and the garden. Maybe even the podcast and the community. Tell me what it is like inside your body when you're quiet.

You will likely start out in labor using your breath and other familiar coping strategies. As you cross from early labor into active labor, you will need to focus intensely on what actually helps you get through each contraction. You will likely look at your birth support and say, "I don't know how much longer I can do this."

If the goal is unmedicated labor, you need to stop thinking and find a rhythm. Succumb to the otherworldliness of labor. Dive in. Like when you are playing in large waves and one is about to crest right on top of you. You take a welcome breath and dive below the wave until it passes.

You will need more than just "focus on your breath." You will need more than a labor comb or a birth ball. You need:

🌀 a support team that is locked in on you
🌀 several different breathing exercises
🌀 position changes that you tried out before labor
🌀 a TENS, a tub, or both (plus a whole bag of tricks)
🌀 a pep talk from someone you trust

People don't get through unmedicated labor without some practice beforehand and some real support. Plan for multiple "f**k no" moments.

I build an altar for every Birthing From Within series, which includes the four anchoring animals of the class: bear, coyote, tiger, tortoise. Each one represents a helpful energy for the four weeks of class.

It is true that my altar looks like a fun place to play when you are small. I like that it is both sacred, and also a good reminder of the life that is to come - with toys scattered on the floor!

Last chance to register for at starting September 8th and learn how big 🐻 energy can help you in early labor 🌀

Control what you can - and freeze those meals.

🌀even if your partner likes to cook
🌀even if you have a meal train
🌀even if you have a small freezer

Hot tip: if you have close friends and family nearby, ask them to store frozen food for you and bring it over at chosen intervals. Or get a deep freezer if you're bougie like my back-up @nightlightbirthandbody ;)

Nobody needs another baby blanket. I love for challenging our modern gatherings to meet our modern needs. A baby shower likely isn't meeting your pre-baby needs, especially if you are q***r and gathering family leads to a lot of, "So who is the father?"

A nesting party is when you invite your people over to help get your house ready for a baby. If you struggle to ask for help, becoming a parent is the perfect time to exercise your community building muscle. Qu**rs already know this, but chosen family is essential for survival - don't be afraid to invite them in to this transition!

If you are ready to tap out of an unmedicated labor, whether you do actually tap our or not, hit the bathroom first:

✨your pelvic floor is pre-conditioned to relax on the toilet
✨its dark
✨it puts two closed doors between you and everyone else
✨walking there is movement which helps progress

We don't call the toilet the "dilation station" for nothing! This is the place where you might feel even more pressure because it will help your baby come down quickly.

I don't think that doulas should ever get into this line of work because they love babies. We don't doula babies. If you would like to hold a newborn, you need to volunteer at a NICU or have your own babies.

I never EVER ask to hold a baby. I am there to doula the parents. To hold the family through the portal of birth. Like a crossing guard, my job is to help guide families safely from one side to the other.

But my goodness, I am honored when clients ask me to take a photo with them and their baby after we make it to the other side. It is one of the highest compliments I ever get. This photo hangs in my office as a bright spot of the work I get to do supporting q***r families 🌀

Doing hard things builds confidence. Anyone who wants an unmedicated labor - and doesn't pull any tricky labor cards like a long labor or difficult fetal position - can do it. There is nothing wrong with wanting to push yourself to a physical and mental extreme.

I get it. And when I decided to do a huge hike in Yakushima, everyone I told was impressed. Maybe they wouldn't want to do that themselves, but they could be proud of me for doing it. I was proud of myself. It built confidence and self-knowing in my body.

Someone else's decisions are not a referendum on your own choices. You don't have to understand to get out of their way or support them. In other words, it is also ok if you don't want any of this. Just don't yuck other people's yums.

What is doula math? It is like a non-gendered girl math, but birthy. It is what I am doing at your birth, especially if things slow down or the labor pattern seems funky. I'm calculating based on your contractions, your pain level, where your baby is in your pelvis, and trying to solve for x (get baby out).

I most certainly will screenshot a webpage and then take notes as we work through the steps. At 3am, I need the visual aid to keep track of what we have and haven't tried.

Asynclitism is when the the babies head comes down cocked to the side at an angle rather than straight on and chin tucked. It can extremely challenging in terms of labor - but this birthing person was willing to do all the things and birthed her baby vaginally!

Don't get me wrong, you are allowed to hoot and holler at your birth. Especially if it helps you cope well. You don't have to say "please" or "thank you" one single time. I always tell my clients that I don't want them to use a single drop of energy that they don't have to.

And, you can also have a little fun. You can dance. You can joke. You can snuggle your partner. You are allowed to have a good time hear and there between contractions.

Smiling, even if you don't mean it, releases dopamine, serotonin, and endorphins that all can lower your stress response.
