We love collaborating with Damiana Health PLLC and other providers in the community to support clients navigating perimenopause and post-menopause!
During perimenopause, fluctuating estrogen and progesterone levels can affect mood, appetite regulation, stress response, and reward pathways in the brain, which may increase the risk of emotional eating and binge eating behaviors in some women.
The menopause transition is a period of increased vulnerability for mood changes, anxiety, and depression, all of which can contribute to disordered eating patterns.
Binge eating and emotional eating may become more common during perimenopause, particularly in women with a prior history of dieting, body image concerns, trauma, or eating disorders.
Weight-neutral, body image supportive care can be especially important during perimenopause, as natural body composition changes and hormone shifts can increase body dissatisfaction, restrictive eating, guilt around food, and binge or emotional eating patterns.
Nutrition support during this stage may look like focusing on adequate nourishment, moving away from all-or-nothing thinking around food, and working on building body trust and self-compassion, all of which can positively support both mental and physical health.
